Before I start, I searched and couldn't really find any topics on this. I've been thinking about this constantly ever since the memory card and controller patents were being talked about. Can Sega successfully get back into the hardware business? By that I mean produce a new next gen console without the fear of falling into obscurity and being completely wiped from video gaming. I don't know how they are doing financially right now or any of that sort of thing at the moment. I will say IF they decide to get back into the home console arena they should not name it "Dreamcast 2". Don't get me wrong I love the Dreamcast a whole lot, but they should distance themselves from it and give birth to something new and innovative. The only reason why they left the console market was because of financial difficulties if I'm correct. What are your thoughts on this subject? |

Right now probably not. Even though it is my dream that sega would get back into the console hardware business in reality they just shut down a bunch of offices in Europe and Australia so chances of them coming back into the console market anytime soon is almost zero. |

Not right now, but I think if they decided to get back in the hardware business sometime down the road, it would sell pretty well |

Nope. I actually prefer SEGA as a third party developer. We don't really gain anything by them having another console, and quite frankly I don't want to spend hundreds of more dollars to buy another console. |

No. They're having enough money trouble as it is, hence the massive restructuring they're planning. Getting back into hardware would decimate Sega right now. |

With their recent layoffs and closures I think this would be the absolute worst time to think about SEGA coming back to the console market. The competition is too fierce....but.....Kickstarter anyone? |

That is definitely an interesting thought. If SEGA were to consider getting back into the hardware business later down the line, Kickstarter would be a much safer way to assure that they wouldn't flop in the market again. The possibilities with Kickstarter are endless. |

My thoughts on the subject are this: It's too late. Back when they made systems, they were innovative and knew how to make hardware exceed to the limits, though software was the complete opposite. So if they made such great hardware back in the day, why can't they do that now? Because "THEY" are no longer "THEY" anymore. Today's Sega is not the old Sega we all loved. Today's Sega probably doesn't know how to make hardware anymore. This is a general though and not just on this subject but everyone's gotta stop thinking that the old companies are still around. Sega, Capcom, even Nintendo, these are not the same companies that we once knew. The fact that people still think that Sega should make a Dreamcast 2 just shows me that they never left 2001. Speak to anyone of this current generation and ask them if Sega should get back to the hardware market. They will either answer "I don't know", "Since when where they in the hardware market", or "is it that company that made Sonic Generations?". tl;dr: Take off the nostalgia goggles every once in a while and look at the companies at their current state. |

My question is, why would sega want to go back into the hardware business? There isnt any point in them doing it, its too costly and there arent enough returns for them to justify it. Companies as big as Sony and Microsoft have way more resources to justify pulling it off, and if it hadnt been for the Wii or DS then Nintendo would have gone the same route as Sega. Also, as J-R mentioned above, Sega isn't Sega anymore. Just like Atari isn't Atari and Activision isn't Activision. Same name, different people, different business models, different priorities. Im also confused about everyones desire for a Dreamcast 2 as well, sure its a great console but why not just help fund homebrews for the original dreamcast? Thats what you really want at the end of the day...more dreamcast games. |

As previously mentioned, their financial situation is barely suitable to publish games at the moment, so I'd forget about the idea of hardware. Man, I just want Anarchy Reigns...

Nope. Not happening. Sad but true. Don't get me wrong, I wish Sega could make new consoles or handhelds. But yes, they are not in any position to do so now as people stated. |

Absolutely not. I know several guys that work at Sega and their focus is on developing online titles. |
