PS Vita: Buy now, or buy later?; The eternal conundrum

Whenever a new system launches, there's always the question of whether to buy now or buy later.

The Vita has already had a turbulent history in Japan, shipments have been reduced to Europe, and its already widely being panned as a failure when it was once widely considered a favorite over the 3DS due to its high performance, high definition visuals and making a console similar to the HD home consoles portable.

So when it comes time for the Vita to launch outside of Japan, there seem to be two schools of thought out there.

A. Buy the system now for a game or two from the launch window that catches your interest, but mainly with the prospect of the systems potential future game selection in mind

B. WAIT until a side selection of must have games are available and see if this system even becomes viable before potentially wasting money on a short lived system with few games

As for me, I'll use the 3DS as an example. I got the 3DS on launch day knowing I only wanted three games on day one, and three other retail games by the end of the year. I paid full price for 3DS, when if I had waited I would have enjoyed a price drop (though Nintendo made up for that with free downloads).

As much of an underwhelming "failure" as the 3DS launch was, I could only imagine the system today being in MUCH WORSE shape if the base of early adopters werent there on launch window to help get the system established for its eventual turnaround. Basically, the people who got 3DS in its launch window did so as an investment in the system's future, and in part thanks to them, the 3DS is now a viable, strong selling platfrom when early on it seemed like it was a total flop.

Vita on the other hand has what I consider an UNCOMMONLY strong launch lineup for a brand new platform. Most systems only launch with one or two memorable games, Vita however has more games I'd consider worthwhile on Day 1 than I can even think to list.

I almost see Vita as Sony's substitute for having a PlayStation 4 in the forseeable future unlike Microsoft and Nintendo who have new home consoles line up for within the next two years. I see sony as being willing to do whatever it takes to make the Vita a strong arm of the PlayStation brand and not a "side dish" as the PSP was to a certain extent.

So from my point of view, if Vita looks cool enough to buy to you, I'd say buy it now while you have the chance and thus slightly boost the odds of the system becoming viable. The more people buying it, the more devs will want to make games for it.

If it weren't for all the early adopters freezing their butts off in front of stores for the 3DS at launch, that system would have no future today and that could make the same difference for the Vita.

I decided to take the hit at first and not wait. It will sting some, but after buying it, I can focus on getting the games I want for it as they go on sale and not have to worry about the system cost. Besides, getting a 3DS early had benefits (20 ambassador games, plus Excitebike, and a bunch of Amazon promotions making my first ten games practically $10 each and some free). Amazon was really good for me with the 3DS preorder, so I'm hoping it will be the same with the Vita. Just got to get system cost out of the way first; then I can concentrate on the games. And Vita looks like it has some great games on the way. Then the questions becomes for multiplat games, like Rayman Origins Vita vs Rayman Origins 3DS version, and can't decide which version to get.

Yeah, I'm definitely getting it early to get the system cost out of the way so I can focus on its games. I don't want to see the system fail, so hopefully Sony won't give up and toss it aside.

I got my 3DS on launch day, and I can safely say that was a mistake for me. I should have seen that it wasn't going to sell well for $250. Once Nintendo reduced the price to $170, it started selling like hot cakes.

As for the Vita, I have no intentions of even purchasing it any time soon. Played it, loved it, not paying all that money for the system, and its expensive as hell memory card.

It took me a while to get the PSP and I definitely didn't regret waiting since the best games for the PSP werereleased much MUCH later (when Xseed started releasing Lunar, Ys...and Square Enix released KH: Birth by Sleep). So I'm also gonna wait with the Vita until a reasonable amount of RPG's will be released for it.

I really am excited about getting it though, it seems like a fantastic handheld....can't wait till I play some of those RPG's in super-high resolution!!

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

I will be getting mine next Thursday. I was going to get it today, had it pre-ordered and everything, but some financial crap got in the way. So, I have to wait a week. Boo. Seems like a fantastic system.

I'd say wait, even though I own the system. The only except I would see to buying it now is if you require an Uncharted or Lumines fix currently.

Waiting for now. The list of compatible RPGs from the PSP that I can play on it is tempting, but I can be patient.

Here's what I don't get. I read an article on Joystiq about worldwide Vita sales and the article seemed to lean toward favoring the Vita as its sales are close to being comparable to what the 3DS had week 1. If the article didn't push that fact than the comments did, there were a lot of comments about the Vita competing well with the week 1 sales of the 3DS which apparently bodes well for the Vita. Now... didn't the 3DS lower its price BECAUSE of slow sales in the early life of the system? I guess I just don't see why those numbers are worth being optimistic over. I will probably get a Vita, I don't think it's a bad system, but I do think that by the time the library is full enough to interest me the price will be lower. In short; I'm waiting.

I am waiting until the price drops to get one and even then there is a good chance i wont pick it up at all. Problem i have with the vita is the someone I had with the psp the memory cards. i don't like having to shell out a good amount of money to be buy a decent memory card for it. If they would have made the system take regular SD or micro sd cards they would have gotten my money. Till this day i don't own a psp.

I guess what they're intending to say is since the 3DS didn't do so well but later did well. That the Vita will follow this trend and later on pick up when there's more games available, and when there is an inevitable price drop. But here's my concern:

I couldn't imagine Sony dropping the price significantly as Nintendo has with the 3DS, as Nintendo overestimated the potential sales the 3DS would garner on release. But what did Sony really have to go by? I think Sony, similar to Nintendo with the 3DS, overatestimated their expectations with the PS3. Once Sony took the bullet with the PS3, and its poor sales [due to the lack of games and a steep price], it probably prompted Sony to be extra cautious with the Vita.

Their effort is apparent with the fact that the Vita was launched at a fairly reasonable price (at least compared to what many of us speculated the price of the Vita would be at launch), and how the Vita came with a decent launch line up. This is the antithesis of any of Sony's previous consoles, and I wonder if Sony has a back up plan aside from have a decent initial launch. They probably do considering they're a multi-million dollar generated corporation run by so many staff and employees. So I will have to say that Sony will have to have a couple of cards up their sleeves besides my pessimistic outlook of Sony trying to appease the market where they didn't with the PS3... And failing, due to the fact that there is games for the Vita when there was not many at launch for the 3DS.

Edit: I'll put this here for perspective to show how each respective handheld hardware did the previous and the current generation.

Well, my friend brought his vita over to my house along with his 3DS, and I have to say that I like the feel of the Vita a lot better than the 3DS. Might skip the 3DS for now and just save up for the Vita.

I believe there is going to be an english language option for the JP release, just like ver. 2 on the Dreamcast. I'm fine with that.

I was really thinking about buying it, but I realized I will probably never play games on it and I just like the thought of having a new gadget. If I'm gonna buy a handheld this generation, which is unlikely but still possible, I would go with the 3DS. The PSP disappointed me last gen and so far the only thing that impressed me with the Vita is that it's big and light.

It's just too expensive for me. Just to get everything I need with Uncharted would cost around $415 on Amazon :/ Those memory cards are just way overpriced.
