Most people in the US don't make much more than $1k in a month

Dude....$1,000 a month is only $250 a week. You do realize at the federal minimum wage you would be clearing $1,000 a month. Correct?

$7.25 an hour x 40 hours a week = $290, take out some taxes per week. And there's your thousand.

If someone is making LESS than the federal minimum wage as their main income (excluding the restaurant industry, which most of them make quite a bit more when tips are added in) Then they shouldn't be pursuing a hobby that requires a $1000 camera.

That's not even being mean. That's common sense.
I said about $1k a month. $40 x 4 is $160 more than my initial $1k statement. So $1,160 minus some taxes and your right around the mark. Sad to say but most people are in this situation. Most of us don't even have savings accounts. The fact that people don't make this much isn't even always their fault either. I don't know what Johnny does for a living but i'm sure he isn't rich. Just because you buy something doesn't mean that you can predict or intend on it breaking. I'm not defending him at all but your statement was a little off-putting to people who work hard for a living and don't make much. And you do come off as a conceded and big headed with most of your statements. " But if he's 21+ and is crying about $1000 and needing donations he's doing something wrong in life." Give me a break. Most people at 21 are still in college and eating Ramen in a smelly dorm room let alone being able to pull a grand out of their ass. It's nice that you're privileged but don't go crapping all over people who can't afford a a good chunk of change at one time.

The real reason the guy didn't have the thousand dollars on hand is because he had just paid for a 4 day trip to PAX West for both himself and his girlfriend. Between the 3 day admission costs for 2 people for and a hotel room in downtown Seattle your already spending several hundred dollars. Add to that the expenses incurred throughout the trip like food, entertainment and games for sale and your already over a grand.

The key thing was the camera failing was unexpected and after spending all that money on the trip he just didn't have the extra grand to throw down. I guarantee you that had Johnny posted a video stating that his camera was broken and he would not be able to fix it to make vids for a few months multiple people would have offered to help pay for it anyway.

I don't mean to insult you or anything, but you're assuming that these people have absolutely no outside costs or bills. $1000/month is easy to get. $1000/month extra once all bills/expenses are paid is another story all together. If you want to be realistic, be realistic.

No offence, but this attitude:

"These guys do so much for us for free out of the goodness of their hearts, and we as human beings should do the same"

Is disgusting, and it genuinely sickens me that people actually think like this.

They're not Mother Teresa, they're just some dude sitting infront of a camera chatting about their favourite hobby. They should do it solely and purely for the entertainment and joy that it brings them. Anything else is bonus.

The idea that this validates them as a kind human being is as perverse as it is grotesque. The nuthuggery and fanboyism shat out by some people is utterly foul.

I don't take offense to your statement, you're entitled to your opinion. I also completely object to it, however.

To think that joy is derived from doing something for self, and to believe the amount of time and effort they put into all of this is purely for their own gratitude is ridiculous.

I'm not a "nuthugger" by any means.

I recognize that sweat equity has value, and don't see the problem in Pete being compensated for all the hard work he has put into a project that you take enjoyment in that costs him money and you nothing.

Producing Content = Time Spent

Time = Money

The energy invested toward creating something needs a reimbursement at some point, so I don't see any problems in the slightest with a donate button. If you don't want to, don't. If you do, do.

Those pizza's are pretty worth it. I got $25 in gift cards to Little Ceasers for Christmas, that's so many pizzas lol

I would donate so that Pete could get some sushi, but the $5 cap would barely purchase one roll. That stuff is expensive :P

On a serious note, I will contribute once I reactivate my Paypal account :)

My favorite standard is the Tuna Roll. I really like the Spicy Tuna Roll as well. I tend to dip them in soy sauce. My #1 favorite though, is the Spider Roll but it's usually a bit more pricey. It is deep fried soft shell crab rolled in a roll with a few other things and tastes amazing(if done right)

Thread officially hijacked. This is now a sushi thread!

The spicy salmon roll and the shrimp tempura rolls are my favorites, but I also love the sashimi and nigiri.

Oh man, now I want sushi. This thread is dangerous :P
