Haha! Great choice for the episode title Pete! Also, glad to see you went with the "more modest" approach with the picture for the episode. With the episode's name, and the plethora of pumpkin asses being spread about, it's a relief! Edited by Eric Olson, Nov 16 2011, 08:34 PM.

I think what the Pandora support rep was trying to tell Gamester was this: They're unable to get enough/working internal wi-fi antennas to manufacture the Pandora in bulk, but they're offering to sell you one that does not have internal wi-fi but comes with an external wi-fi antenna for an extra $122. They'd probably rather wait until they can get the internal antennas working so they can go into mass production, but as a way to appease people who might otherwise cancel their orders they're offering to sell you something that is partially broken on the condition that you're aware that it's partially broken. $122 seems entirely too much for an external antenna, but that's something else entirely. |

Thanks for picking me to ask a question, even though I was totally unprepared for it. I didn't think I would actually get picked. I was so worried about burping or mouth breathing into my mic that I didn't even hear the answers to my question! Now I can. =) It was amusing to see everyone's reactions in chat. Can't wait for future live podcasts!

What an excellent episode! Incredibly funny and entertaining, I was honestly dreading the end of it ha. Jason's cousin was a great guest too, would happily hear him on the show again down the line. And of course it's always a blast to hear Robman on there. Keep up the good work! |

About whether Walley World was a real place or not, the amusement park that was used in the filming of the movie was actually Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. So, the amusement park was real, it's just not actually Walley World in real life. |

I agree with Pete on Sonic Generations: excellent game, without a doubt the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2. Which is to say, ever. I have to disagree though about the later stages not being as good as the first ones; my favourite level of the whole game was actually the Classic Sonic act of Rooftop Run. There's something about the music, the festivity, not to mention the brilliant level design that made me feel that Sonic is truly back. I also quite enoyed City Crisis; as I've never actually played Sonic 2006, the broken city felt like a fresh concept for a Sonic stage. I'm personally quite enoying the side missions as well. Granted, some of them are nothing more than 'beat the same level again, but faster', but most of them throws entirly new mini-stages at you, most of which ust as good as the main stages. |

This is a pet peeve of mine, but I've been hearing on more than one podcast lately, including yours, that a lot of people think a cartridge based console should come back and that with flash memory storage capacity there's no reason why they can't do one. This is simply not true due to economics. First, let's take a good current example, Rage. Rage for the 360 comes on three dual-layer DVDs. A dual-layer, single-sided DVD holds about 8.5GB of data. We can probably assume that they aren't using 100% of the space on each disc, because of file sizes, and there's probably some data that exists in duplicate form on all three discs. In which case, we can just say the game is at minimum 17GB. The cost per gigabyte for a DVD is measured in the single cents, and that's buying them at retail. Since these companies are getting tens and even hundreds of thousands of copies of these discs, they're getting bulk rates. So in a worst case scenario of 10 cents a gigabyte, we're talking about $5 for all three discs. Honestly, I think that's much, much more than they actually cost in reality but still works well enough to get the point across. As of earlier this year, flash memory cost about $1.80 per GB (retail). So our same theoretical 17GB game, we're already spending $30 just the memory storage. Then, we have consider the extra shipping costs involved with a cartridge, because it won't be as tiny as a DS cart, and will probably be heavier than a few DVDs. Not only that, they'll have to design and produce different packaging, while DVD-style packaging has been pretty much standardized since 10 years ago and they're already cutting every last possible bit of plastic out of them to save on weight and plastic. So already, we're in a situation where a game manufacturer, in order to put "current" and "next gen" games in a cartridge, would be going from spending less than 5% of the retail cost of the game on the media, to spending at least 20% of it on flash memory. For a game like Battlefield 3, that would be giving up 125 million dollars in profits in their first week, just for the sake of making a cartridge format game. Why would they ever want to do that? But here's the kick, DS games don't even use flash memory, they use programmable mask ROM chips that for some games are as small as 128 megbits, or 16 megabytes! It is theorized that DS cards can hold up to 512MB but as to the actual cost per GB I can only guess, since I don't know how much mask ROM costs to produce or if it's even practical to scale up into the multi-gigabyte range. The reason why chip-based memory works in portables, especially the DS and 3DS vs the PSP, is that portables do not require nearly the same amount of graphical, audio, and other data as a modern full-fledged console game. This is the exact reason why even Nintendo finally switched to optical discs for the Gamecube: optical media was and still is much, much cheaper than chip-based memory storage. I for one would love for a new, retro-themed 8 or 16-bit console to be released that produced games in cartridge form, but I just don't see ever happening in a next gen console. I'm sure this post will probably be largely ignored, either for being on the second page of a weekly episode thread that is already long in the tooth, or just because of it's length, but for any of you who may have read it in its entirety you have my thanks. This is something that has been gnawing at the back of my mind for a few weeks now and I just had to rant on the subject for a bit. Edited by Shulamana, Nov 20 2011, 11:09 AM.

I really enjoyed this episode and thought that the Dongles was a fantastic guest. Call me crazy, but my favorite part was the 11 minute tangent on cereal. Being a child of the 80's, I remember all those awesome movie tie-ins such as Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles and C-3P0's cereal. Good times. One particular thing that caught my ear was Fruity Marshmallow Krispies, a certeal that I only remember being on the market for a short time in the mid 80's. However, what I remember it more for was the commercial. It was a Carribean theme where the lyric "lots of fruity marshmallow shapes" was the chorus, however the word "shapes" sounded like "shits". I was 6 years old at the time and I laughed every time the commercial came on. Here's the original version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRx8U9BfWqY Here's the version they re-dubbed to make the word "shapes" sound more obvious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skBeDP9xhq8&feature=related Anyway, completely random and off-topic but enjoyable nonetheless

Really great episode and Dirty Dongles was a fantastic guest; great chemistry with all of you guys. I hope he comes back for another episode in the not too distant future. I second all the views about the cereal nostalgia. What a great 11 minutes! Coming from the UK I too remember the good times growing up in the 80s digging around cereal packs just for those shitty toys - forget liking the actual cereal! Simpler times I guess. I'd like to chime in on the excellent storage media question and say that I think we're in for another round of DVD/Bluray and some other optically read medium (possibly for the next XBOX seeing as Bluray is unlikely) for the next generation of home machines. However let's not forget that PSVita will be using physical memory sticks for boxed titles, which could be another possibility for future home machines but it's questionable how big these things will be. Interesting times and that's why E3 2012 is surely my most anticipated since 2000's shocking PS2 MSG2 trailer. Side note: Totally felt for Robman with the 'A Serbian Film' jokes. As funny as I've found them (especially Pete's sound clips!) I can totally understand that it would be more than a little off-putting if you have kids of your own :/ |

While admittedly there were lots of bad Batman games in the past there is also a fantastic co-op one. The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Sega Genesis is a wonderful beat em' up and is very cheap now. Plus the music was done by Jesper Kyd who has more modern work with the Hitman series and Assassin's Creed. |

Good point. I've actually turned off a few of the previous podcasts due to Pete's consistant mentioning of this film. Thanks for saying something Robman. Props to Jason and John for making sucessful attempts in steering to conversation in other directions on previous episodes. Edited by nesgenguy, Dec 8 2011, 11:33 PM.
