I just finished listening this and jotted some notes to make a comment about this week's episode.

The proper way to say ICO is the way Pete was saying it; the Japanese way is the same. イコ (I ・KO) is how the game is written using Japanese Katakana. イ (I) sounds like the letter e in the word be, while コ (KO) sounds like co in the word code. The phonetic writing of ICO is ˈiːkoʊ which is the same sound as the Japanese pronunciation.

Always love the DQ love being thrown around:D As much love as that game gets, another game I would like to mention as an amazing RPG on the PS2 is Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra. It might be my favorite PS2 RPG.........maybe.

Final Fantasy IX gets so little love sometimes:( It seems to be one a lot of people skipped out on playing. I wonder why that is. Was it because of the love/hate many people felt towards FF VIII? It is a great addition to the Final Fantasy franchise, which, I agree, has been diluted quite a bit as of late. Oh, and FF V a part of a Trilogy? Maybe for worst story in an RPG. My disdain for FF V will never subside:p

Time travel is one of those plot devices, which can be done absolutely horribly if not pulled off well. I couldn't think of too many games, where that was the central theme and the game was awesome. However, the couple that I could think of that were fun as hell to play: Chrono Trigger (of course:D) and Radiant Historia.

Though I was never a big fan of AVGN, I do enjoy HVGN's videos, so it was nice to hear him on the podcast. I thought it was funny that he was talking about not trying to be controversially about things and then drops what would have been a bombshell back in the preyoutube days, saying FF VII wasn't amazingly good. I think in some circles it might still strike a chord, but hopefully that isn't the case now.

Anywho, good listen. Hopefully, for next week, John won't have a delay and Jason won't be lost on the battlefield:p

I swear, SquareEnix has the worst PR management in the world; why do they take it upon themselves to apologize for past failures, and to remind the gaming public about how they've tarnished their own franchise? (Final Fantasy 14)

All they need to do is move on to the next game, maybe?!

It sucks to see long-time favorite developers stepping on their own toes.

My favorite Final Fantasys are from the 8-bit and 16-bit generations becuase they were still rooted in fantasy role playing. They've lost it with all the new gloss and high end graphics.

Great show guys!

Wasn't aware there was a translated physical copy of Sweet Home floating around. I remember stumbling upon it back in high school when looking up info on Resident Evil. Interesting in what it spawned, plus the fact it's one of the 'more successful' mergings of a film & game. I might have to look into it even though I'm not the biggest RPG fan.

Oh, Star Wars... I've got to rant for a minute.
Without explaining what has been said numerous times, altering the original trilogy needs to stop. It's been nearly 15 years since the Special Editions and yet this bullshit continues. 15 years. 15 years of a bad joke that never ends and still finds new ways to rattle the cages. Regardless if you like the prequels or enjoy the updates, you should acknowledge the cash cow being milked one too many times. I have not heard one person complain that after all these years and all of these re releases we are just NOW receiving deleted scenes and original footage not used in the films...

Me personally, I don't care as much these days. It obviously gets under my skin when new changes are constantly made, but nothing will top one of the original changes made in the Special Edition of A New Hope. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm referring to Greedo shooting first.

Han Shot First.

Far more significant than mere fanboy talk, which I had to spell out to a co-worker last week.
In A New Hope, Han Solo originally shot Greedo in 'cold blood' in a rather sly fashion. Beginning in the Special Editions, Greedo shot first so Han could respond in self defense. Now, besides looking horrible on screen, this is flawed for 2 reasons.

The 1st. It looks like shit. I know I just said that, but seriously. Han's head suddenly dodging a bullet/blaster looks like absolute shit. Trust me, I could go on, but all in all it's ridiculous.

The 2nd factor is more legit in storytelling than simply talking shit on these films. Most of you already know this, but whenever I get into a geek debate about Star Wars, I find it surprising that many people don't acknowledge this so I'm going to spell it out and get this bs out of my system.

Han needs to shoot first to put more emphases on one of the films strongest points. It's established he's a rouge smuggler hanging out in a shady bar, blatantly kills someone in public, and stops giving a shit about the alliance as soon as he gets his money. These factors define his character and overall effect the moment when he decides to return to the Death Star and save Luke.

Some might not think it's a big deal and just simple storytelling, but it takes away from the climax of the film and few notice or even care. That's why I get pissed, Han Solo is more a pop icon than a film character. From both a visual and character standpoint, Han not shooting first is one of the biggest shit stains on cinema history. People can call me a troll or complain about my bitching but seriously, 20, 30, 50 years down the line when physical media is gone and everything is streaming, at this rate, unless EVERY version is available, which one do you think George Lucas is going to feed you first? Which ones will your grand kids watch first? Star Wars is Star Wars and everyone knows the lore, but still consider future generations initial viewings. No need to thank Lucas for giving us Star Wars in the first place and continuously throwing money at him. People will always blindly support him and easily dismiss all of this, but there is a time when you just have to say, Fuck you George.

Okay I have to say this after hearing a lot of what you guys had to say about Final Fantasy XIV. I actually love Final Fantasy XIV!, and I will say that I did not play the game during the beta or with in the first year of it release. I bought the collectors edition about 4 months ago and figured why not give it a try, for at the time I was playing and I said to myself what the fuck is wrong with me? I am playing a game which is nothing more than a game about having the biggest fucking numbers in the land so that everyone else can praise me for my fucking numbers. There is very little story or immersion in wow I my opinion which brings someone into the game and cause them to get lost in another world.

So after hearing Pete talk about how they are going to rebuild the game makes me a little worried that it will turn into wow. If that happens the only mmo which I found that made feel like I was actually living a world where I was living my story or my charterers life. If you are someone who wants to play a mmo with a lot of story to it and has a "real-life" feel to ( in real life I mean you want some armorer make it) that will suck you into the games world by all means play FFXIV!

I was someone who at first thought after hearing all this negativity about the game thought it was crap and that there was no way hell am playing this shit. After I have played it am grateful that I did. I do agree that Square-Enix has been making shity games of late. Like FFXIII and no matter how many people defend that game it's still shit! I will not forgive them for fucking it in its early stage of development. Though there is hope Final Fantasy Type-O is looking really good :D, and I hope that Versus XIII dose not suffer that same fate as XIII did. Any who love the podcast!

I was fine until the end when you guys talked about 2600.org going down. I haven't been around there for a few months, so I went to double check. It's true..... Atari is once again taking the "big dog" road and bullying the very people that they know damn well have kept quality assurance in check by being picky consumers. Remember when they were bullying websites and threatening with lawsuits for putting up negative reviews?
Sorry... It was a great show gents. The Atari thing just threw me into a fit of rage the likes of which I haven't experienced in a while. Who the hell do they think they are?! If anyone in the world deserves to tout the Atari brand and namesake, it sure as hell isn't the clowns who are currently running Atari.
Stay tuned and stay rad dudes and dudettes!

Pete, I got ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Remastered for my birthday. I am really eager to play them both. They have always been on my list of games to play on the ps2, just never got around to it! Right now I have my hands full with White Knight Chronicles II and RAGE!

One of the best episodes so far IMO.

It's mainly because Pete has got me to buy Ico and Shadow of the Colossus and hearing about his view on his recent playthrough was worth taking note of.

Also the amount of RPG talk was quantified well, especially hearing about my next nes purcahse lol.

Cheers

Great show, actually one of the first I've watched of yours in a while Pete. Ever thought of doing something on Space Quest, Master of Orion, or X-Com? Great games that no one ever seems to talk about.

@Botzabrand: Totally agree. Star Wars is getting the Activision treatment and Han Solo was a rogue. He wasn't supposed to be liked, that's why his sudden change of heart was so endearing and made him my favorite character for years to come. Changing that simple "first impression" makes things different for the generations that watch the new crap and don't know any better.

@Canoness24: I played FF14 when it first came out, I have no clue what Squenix was thinking. Easily the worst MMO of all time for me. No auction house and then even after making it so you could search the NPC's, it was only by the name of that individual NPC and not by the item that you actually needed. Something so simple as that really turned me off. Beautiful game and I enjoyed FF11 with Pete for many months, would've rather had more of the same instead of something so off-putting as that POS.

You should check out Harmy's Despecialized Editions of the original three movies.

Anyway, I'll agree that Han's dodge looks like complete shit, but Han's character changes a lot throughout the three movies. As such, yes, in this case, it makes more sense for Han to shoot first, because he hasn't met Luke and Leia yet. When Han comes back at the end of the first movie, it's clear that his sensibilities have changed. (If you're referring to his attempt to leave Hoth, however, then bear in mind that he was doing that because bounty hunters were actively pursuing him.) I doubt that he would've shot first had this particular scene taken place toward the end of the original trilogy.

Really need to sit down with Sweet Home someday.

Derek recommended Earthbound, Journey To Silius, Metal Storm, D and few more games that I really enjoyed!

I'll have to look into this Harmy's review, as well as redletterbox prequel reviews discussed on the podcast.

I see where you're coming from, but this happened during the character's introduction scene rather than the end of the trilogy. I think Soulless summarized it perfectly above. It's a shame these first impressions will be lost in time and/or overlooked simply because Star Wars is STAR WARS. It's all common knowledge anyway, right?

Scenes like Han not shooting are ridiculous on many levels and new additions like Obi-Won's krayt dragon whale howl are just as laughable. I don't know whether to laugh or cry that shit like this is still happening. How much integrity can this franchise lose? Not enough obviously.

And for those who say they are George Lucas's films and he can do what he wants with them, why? Once a film is released to the public, adored by countless fans, breaks box office records, becomes a part of our culture, makes millions in merchandise sells, builds an legacy and film EMPIRE, I think it's safe to say the first submission will suffice.

Considering the ground these films broke and the rate technology grew, it's like the equivalent of famous artists resubmitting classic works of art already persevered and on display in museums. Not only would they receive finical benefits, numerous times, they would also be molding the past to more modern standards.

If you don't vote, you can't bitch ;(

I agree with you when you say "No auction house and then even after making it so you could search the NPC's, it was only by the name of that individual NPC and not by the item that you actually needed." That something that simple can be a turn off.

I see where they were trying to do something new but failed and yes once that gets fixed the game will be better. Still I wish that they would have used the features from when it come to venders for gear and the auction house from FFXI would have been awesome. I will say that having to Google a NPC is rather retarded and should be a easy task to accomplish. Though one thing I think players looked over about FFXIV is that the game wants you to be self efficacy. Which is something that I actually would rather have than a Auction house were I will end up paying like 150% of the coast of the item. Were as if I had just sat down and made the item I would have earned an increase in skill and I would have save me some Gil. At the same time the convenience is a wonderful thing to have in a MMO.

I enjoy the soundtrack, but the Darkness is a definite fit. One over the top band complements one over the top game. I had a few friends who couldn't get past the story and simply quit playing the game. My advice was just ignore the story, mute the game, listen to that album.

You should consider Knockers, Hazel Eyes, and Girlfriend for a future session ;)

Took me a while to get around to listening to this episode, but I enjoyed it mainly because I had been a fan of the HVGN since almost the time he started, and I'd been hoping to see him and Johnny do something together.

In fact, I actually requested him as a guest almost exactly one year ago. ;)
