LINK This episode is for all of you RPG fans out there as we are joined by Greg "RPGSwagman" to discuss all kinds of RPG news, nostalgia, and opinions on the recent anouncements that came out of Tokyo Game Show. We also talk about Studio Ghibli and games like Ni No Kuni, Dragon Quest X, Phantasy Star, Ys, White Knight Chronicles, and Sora No Kiseki. For those of you who are looking for talk about things other than our RPG fanfare, later in the show we also discuss racing and shooting games to some extent. Johnny, I can't believe you didn't like Jurassic Park! Why the fuck did you watch it on VHS? That movie was in theaters for like a year! I don't really care for Jurassic Park 2 (the novel is way better) and I was so disappointed by it that I never bothered to see JP3, but the first one is a fucking classic. I'm surprised Pete and Johnny didn't like Yangus's voice in DQ8! I just finished beating it the other day for the first time, and both Yangus and King Trode are freaking hilarious and awesomely acted. I loved Yangus. Most of the voice actors were great, but there were a couple of bad ones in there for some of the side characters. |

I'll hafta check out RPGibberish for its Castlevania episode. I love Castlevania. ![]() Speaking of Castlevania, I tend to be somewhat annoyed at the use of the term Metroidvania, but that's more so because it's misused so often. To me, a Metroidvania is a Castlevania game that borrows features from Metroid games, nothing more. The term is just thrown around to the extent that it no longer accurately portrays the style of game play that you should expect from the so-called Metroidvania. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet - This game is often referred to as a Metroidvania, but it doesn't play anything like a Castlevania or Metroid game. Sure, you're exploring and gaining new abilities, but this particular game would best be described as an adventure game. If you refer to a game as a Metroidvania, then I'm expecting it to contain a playable character who walks/runs around and attacks primarily with melee weapons. Even still, it should be a Castlevania game; non-Castlevania games with this game play style should be referred to as Metroidvania-style games. Shadow Complex - This game is also often referred to as a Metroidvania, but it'd best be described as a Metroid-style game. Why? Because there's actually very little that'd qualify it as a Metroidvania-style game. You have a melee attack, but everything else points to Metroid. Bear in mind that I'm not so much annoyed at the mere usage of the term Metroidvania; I'm annoyed at the misuse of the term. It's irritating to me when I hear or read someone raving about a so-called Metroidvania game, only for me to discover that it plays nothing like an actual Metroidvania game. You don't "immediately know what kind of game it is" if you hear someone calling a game a Metroidvania, because any game that involves collecting new tools or exploring areas seems to be deemed a Metroidvania nowadays. Anyway, sorry for the rant of sorts. I just wanted to share my outlook on the whole Metroidvania thing.

Regarding Landstalker, Johnny, you should really give Light Crusader (another Genesis game in the same style as Landstalker) a shot. It uses the same isometric perspective as Landstalker, but it presents everything so much more fairly. It's also a really underrated game from Treasure. |

Excellent episode as usual but extra epic due to the fact I am the other half of RPGibberish. Thanks a lot for the kind words regarding RPGibberish. Loved the talk about RPGs for it is the same reason we started our own. So much to talk about. Also a huge Ghibli fanatic so it is great to hear you talk about it. Pom Poko is a hard-to-get movie due to the fact that tanuki lore is used so much throughout the movie. Read up on some tanuki stuff (same like Mario Bros 3, which is not the same as a raccoon) and you will enjoy Pom Poko a lot more! My least favorite but still very enjoyable Ghibli is My Neighbor Yamadas. And I have to correct you Pete, Makoto Shinkai is not part of Studio Ghibli. His movies Voices on a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised In Our Early Days are fantastic though. This year he released his newest Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below. Havent been able to watch this one yet, but it is probably very good. Onwards to the rest of the episode! |

Oh I know that, you must have misheard what I said (not sure how I worded it) but I usually recommend his films to fans of Miyazaki. 5cm actually ranks as one of my favorite films of all time. I am going to his panel at this yeard NYCC, I am very excited to see him in real life! |

I believe when most people refer to the term "MetroidVania" it boils down to the simplest terms of a 2D sidescroller with many branching paths, dead end rooms that often contain upgrades to advance exploration, and a map which is revealed over time as you explore. Its a lot easier to describe these style of 2D games simply as "Metroidvania" rather than have to try and explain it like I just did. Its refered to as Metroidvania because between SOTN and Super Metroid, they are the two most iconic games that shared similar map layouts and power up progression (gain a new power = gain access to new areas). Just because a game contains no melee combat or actual platforming does not mean that the term is not helpful in conveying the games sense of layout and exploration aspects. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is a very straightforward and simplified take on this style of game. It blends a twin stick shooter with a kinda linear progression but the core concepts still remain the same. |

I understand the point that you're making, but isn't it still overkill to use the term Metroidvania (in that you're essentially referencing two separate games or series) when you could simply refer to a game like ITSP as a Metroid-style game? Metroid has: - many branching paths - dead end rooms that often contain upgrades to advance exploration - a map which is revealed over time as you explore ITSP has: - many branching paths - dead end rooms that often contain upgrades to advance exploration - a map which is revealed over time as you explore SotN added RPG elements such as experienced-based leveling, as well as an emphasis on melee combat. A melee-focused combat system has a considerably different feel from a range-focused combat system, and I do think that referring to a game as either a Metroid-style game or a Metroidvania-style game at least helps to make that distinction clear. Now, I'll agree that listing a game's features isn't as efficient as simply applying a broad term to said game, but - even in that case - ITSP would be best described as a twin-stick space shooter with Metroid-style exploration. Sure, that description is longer than Metroidvania, but it's still much shorter than a complete feature rundown and gives the listener a much better idea of what to expect. On another note, I'm still listening to the podcast, and "veloci-fucking-raptor" is probably the funniest thing that I've heard Pete say thus far. XD |

By the way, Pete, Ed Findlay (RetroGamer3) seems to really like that PSN card game that you mentioned in this episode. (He did a review of it, in fact.) You may want to see about playing against him in it, as he's relatively new to it, as well. |

Should be an interesting episode to listen to in that while I am a fan of RPGs, I am not a die-hard fan like some people out there are and can easily finish multiple RPGs easily within the year. Boils down to free time and some people have more free time than others hence why they can finish more than others. To kevinski, I assume you mean Eye of Judgment with your latest comment. |

Great episode. I can't say I am the most hardcore when it comes to RPGs, but I do enjoy them. I am about to go grab White Knight Chronicles II right now. Pete has convinced me since I was a PSO whore back in the day. It looks like a total blast, and online is a big plus for me! |

Great episode once again!! T'was so great that you had Greg on the podcast, since I'm following him for a while now on his RPGSwagman channel and ofcourse the RPGGibberish podcast with his equally great Youtube-pal Aerodynamisch, love both your channels a bunch (also the Kojimakollector, cinemea and Squaresoftspecialist ones)!!! Truly loved all the RPG talk and the epic bit where Johnny and Greg were talking about Big Trouble in Little China one of my most fave movies ever.....I knew all those quotes you mentioned LOL...I can probably quote the whole thing too, seen it probably more then 50 times (in the VHS days). "Son of a bitch must pay!...LOL, love it!! And all the talk about the differences between TV tech from now and in the '80's and '90's. So funny, because I remember those days so clearly...it's as it was yesterday that you had to actually turn knobs to change the volume/brightness/contrast/tuning etc etc Ahhhh....the good old days. Nowadays people are really spoiled with their cheap HD, pixel perfect, super thin screens. Edited by BKMcGlynn, Sep 22 2011, 04:03 PM.

I loved this podcast, RPGswagman was a interesting guest! I have the same feelings about the Master System as Johnny: My long summer playing Miracle Warriors, my big old map layed out in the living room, my own personal adventure. This wasn't possible outside an expensive PC or playing a real table top RPG. Miracle Warriors ROCKED for its time! And then Phantasy Star after that....that was some BADASS gaming to those who remember! |

I don't know what it is about Studio Ghibli films (at least the ones I've seen) but I just couldn't get into them. The art is gorgeous so I'm definitely pumped for Ni no Kuni, but film-wise they unfortunately don't do it for me. Speaking of HD collections also, I don't know but the announcement about Final Fantasy X was the point where I thought, okay, enough for now. I'm not against updates or remakes at all - I enjoy some, I have others pre-ordered - but right now it kind of feels like the 'new' thing. I guess I'm just hoping it doesn't get out of hand. |

I just finished listening to this one, awesome as usual! To RPGSwagman (or anyone else): Anyone can actually get more then 15 minute videos on Youtube. All you have to do is have them send you a confirmation to your email. The button to do that is on the upload page *see pic.* I just got it on my account I started this month. ![]() Click on 'Increase your limit.' They ask for cell phone number and send you a verification code. Once you enter the code you're all set!! Hope this helps everyone. To be honest, I thought everyone knew about this.

Great discussions on the Tales of series! The skits (banter between characters) are indeed a staple of Tales games. Tales of Vesperia is still one of my favorite games on the X360, my favorite RPG this generation. Xenoblade Chronicles is an intersting RPG but honestly not my preferred style of RPGs. Still struggling to continue with the game, only 7 hours in but the fetch quests etc. are too repeptive. The voice acting was OK in English but hearing Shulk say What a Joker! for the umpteenth time meant switching back to Japanese. Will give it a continued playthrough soon but Gears of War 3 and Deus Ex were in my mailbox yesterday! |

Interesting to hear Jason and Pete talk about Dead Island and the looting problem. This is exactly what bothers me with Xenoblade Chronicles. Everytime I need to loot from enemy drops. It takes 5 seconds for each enemy. Annoying. FF XII already had instant looting. Fallout 3 annoyed me with constant looting as well.... |
