Just stumbled across this for the first time ever only a few minutes ago through the RPGFan front page.

http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Legend_of_Heroes_Trails_in_the_Sky/index.html

I really respect RPGFan's opinions and when I saw an RPG I had never heard about get such a high score I figured I may want to pick it up. Story has always been the biggest draw for me and when I saw 92% for story my interest really peaked.

Has anyone heard of this or maybe played the Japanese version that was released a few years ago?

Had the money on a gift card so I decided to pick it up! Went with the premium addition for 40 bucks which includes the soundtrack a poster and some kind of metal pen or something. Now I have to play the waiting game :(

If you know Muragaru553 then he is a good person to ask about it. He highly recommends it whenever it is mentioned. He played the Japanese version.

They are great, but still have some work to do to reach the status of WD.

They may not have a cult following as strong as Working Designs, but I think I like them better (for various reasons).

I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and it's a great looking box and set. I haven't had a chance to crack it open and really delve into the game at all but I am looking forward to it in the future.

Man I was really impressed with the box and set for this game. I actually felt like paying the extra 10 dollars was worth it this time (and that has not happened in a while).

I have put 7 hours in to this game so far and am really enjoying it! As a recent first time player of the Lunar series (which I'm obsessed with now btw) Trails in the Sky really has been giving me the same feeling as I play it. I love the music of this game and the characters are really starting to hook me. But one of the best and possibly overlooked/unmentioned part of the game is the incredibly fast load times between screens. Unlike some other psp games where after walking through a door you have to wait a few seconds for the next screen to load, Trails in the Sky does an incredible job at loading the next area in less than .5 seconds.

I have noted one negative about this game that took me some time to get used to. The lead characters walking speed seemed entirely to fast when I first started the game. You can push and hold the X button to slow to a more reasonable pace but this pace is just a tad to slow to play the game with.

I'd recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of character and story driven turn-based RPGs. I plan on putting in at least 7-10 hours this weekend so I'll continue posting updates about this game. But if anyone is on the wall about this title I can say without hesitation that you should definitely pick it up.

There was no question for me to get the premium edition. I'd already gone that route with the Ys games Xseed has packaged together and knew this would be a nice addition to the collection. If you have that extra money it's worth it for these PSP titles.

Glad to hear some positive feedback on the game so far. I doubt I can actually sit down and start it up soon (Stupid Front Mission) but I'm looking forward to trying it soon.

Well Pete I'd say if you have the money to spare, you should pick it up. One of the better collectors edition I've gotten with a full soundtrack, poster, and bracer badge. Even if this one is going to sit on the shelf for a while I'd recommend anyone to get it now before we see it disappear from stores.

It is so tough going through these Goliath sized rpgs. I am playing Xenogears at the moment and it is amazing(besides the damn redic random encounter rate) and I am going to beat it and near doing so, but man spending that much time on a game is a huge investment of time.

I don't know about others, but a 50 hour game isn't something I am going to beat in a week. I am going to need to dedicate a good month of gaming to get through it.

Unfortunately I'm at a point in my life where video game playing has not really been possible. Graduating from college, finding a job, and of course.... my last ever final exams start tomorrow! I am finished with all my finals this Saturday at noon so the minute that exam lets out I'm planning on playing Trails in the Sky.

As far as how the game is going... well since my last post I have put in only 3 hours (10 total). For those that don't know, Trails in the Sky's story is set up like a book. There is a prologue which builds the structure for Chapters 1-4.

During the prologue you are basically learning about the characters, exploring the first town, and learning what it means to be a bracer. I got through this section of the game after about 8 hours.

I just put in 2 hours towards chapter 1 and can say that I really am enjoying this game. The characters really leave me the same feeling the characters from the Lunar series had. My attachment to the characters is what keeps me playing through the boring 10-15 opening hours every RPG makes players deal with. The battle system also is very similar to Lunar with the main difference being that the battle field set up in blocks to determine movement and attack area.

All in all I can say without hesitation that anyone looking for a new RPG that has a great set of characters and story should really pick this title up. I hope to put in more hours this weekend so maybe after another 10 hours I can post another update.

I got to chapter II a few days ago. I am really enjoying this one! One thing I was finding a little funny was how low your levels are this far into the game. I just hit the 20 hour mark and all of my characters are only level 15! I'm also a bit of a grinder so those levels may be a level or so above normal.

I appear to have just finished the introductory section of the story. Most of the characters have developed their stories far enough so that you begin to get an idea of what they are all about. While the game has a very easy going feel most of the time, there is a constant reminder that this games world was in a massive war only 10 years earlier. These quick reminders of the war are a great way of keeping you wanting to get further in the game to learn more about how the war has affected each character.

Still would recommend this game! The only thing is now I would be a tad hesitant to recommend this game to people new to RPGs.

I'm almost finished with this game. I don't know about you guys but I really didn't like it as much as Ys Seven. It's a good game but I really didn't like the characters saved for a few like Joshua, whom I wish was the lead because I really don't like Estelle. Also, is it just me or does this game have a feminist vibe to it? I can't explain but it feels like the creator put more emphasis on girl power in this game.

I finally finished this game. My verdict: I don't like it. In fact, I may be on the verge of hating this game but the reason why I don't hate it is because the story is very good and the ending conversation between Estelle and Joshua really might be worth going through the game. It's just I have some issues with this game that I really don't like because it makes this game different from what I've experienced in other RPG games, namely Ys Seven, which is the game I played before this game, so I was kinda hoping it would be on the same caliber since it's by Falcom. In fact, it kinda does feel like a Ys game, so I guess it's a Falcom thing.

First off, before I go on, there are spoilers for the ending so if you didn't finish it, I suggest you not read on.

The main thing I did not like about this game was Estelle. At first sight, you see her as a really energetic young girl whose eager to get into the fray of a fight but she is also kinda a ditz. Though throughout the game you can select options so she won't look too naive but her personality does not change, and I wanted it to change. I really did not like Estelle's shoot-first-ask-questions-later approach to things. I thought this was just her at first but later on she would grow to be mature or get serious, but she just stayed like that throughout the game. I wouldn't mind this kind of character if they were in my party but she's the main character and I really do not wish to identify myself with this kind of girl. I sometimes wished that Joshua would be the main character since he's the quiet type and he could pull off being the silent protagonist. You can change the order of the group so Estelle could be 2nd or even the 4th character but that doesn't change the fact that she is still the main protagonist. ^o)

The second thing that I have a problem with is that every character you meet does not get equal part in the game. Some characters, like Estelle, is a Mary Sue that hogs the spotlight and others are brushed away like they weren't important enough. You have 8 great and not so great characters but you only get one or two characters every chapter and eventually they leave before the next chapter so you can get another character in it's place. The only time everyone (or at least almost everyone) becomes a part of your party is the final stage, and even then, you still are limited to only choosing 2 members because Joshua and Estelle are permanent members AND you can only change characters at specific locations instead of anytime you want. That means that in the final stage, everyone comes together but they just stay in one point so they can keep an eye out for...some reason and you can only take two characters to traverse through the labyrinth at the end of the game and if you wish to change a character, you either 1.) go back ALL they way back where everyone is gathered 2.) Traverse until you find your way to the next rendezvous point so everyone will meet up there. Why do that? Why can't everyone just come with you so you can change party members any time you wish? I mean, this is the only time every character you have used in battles have come together to fight the big bad but you are limited to having only 2 tag along and if you pick one that didn't get enough experience up to this point or you have a specific item you gave another character who you left behind and you wish to give it to one of your party members and find out when you are in the middle of the labyrinth and have low health and in danger of dying, then TOO BAD, you either gotta go back, pray you don't die along the way, or keep going, hoping the next door will lead to the next rendezvous point.

The third things I really don't like is Tita's involvement in this game. As I've said, this game seems to have favored some characters and screwed the others and Tita got it worse than anyone else. I mentioned in my previous post that this game has a real feminine vibe to it. It seems like female character seems to play an even bigger and important role than most, if not, all other RPG's I have ever played. I mean, besides Estelle being the main protagonist, you have a scene where they are planning a play where gender roles are reversed, the Queen mentioning that a Col. Richard (or somebody else, I can't remember) does not wish for the throne to be succeeded by a woman, and Duke Dunan being a chauvinist jerk. All this is great and except for one thing: Tita did not get the same treatment as all the other female characters. I'll admit, I'm the type of guy who would play as a guy rather than a girl but it's not a really big deal. If the lead character is female, I wouldn't care less and in this game, Estelle didn't bother me as the leading role just because she was a girl (but being annoying is another issue though), but I actually really like playing as very young girls in games. I actually cheer for the young girls who are taking a heroic role and will gladly have them in my party and level them up as equally as everyone else. Though in most video games, they are usually under power, which is disappointing to me, but when a game has them as a equal, I really enjoy the game even more, and when I learned about the whole girl power thing in this game, I figured Tita was going to get the same treatment. I thought she was going to be a hero and rescue someone from danger and everyone would praise her. I WAS WRONG! She got screwed! She got totally screwed! Not only was she not the hero, she actually made things worse, and that just pissed me off! Every main female lead and even those on the sides are all portrayed as strong and independent but Tita gets treated like a defenseless little girl even though she has a FREAKING GATTLING GUN! Just because of her age, everyone treated her like a nobody. Joshua even used the excuse that she was a civilian, even though they gladly let Kloe in the previous chapter join them in their fights. In the end of the chapter, even though you had her in your party for a rescue mission, she was just brushed aside. The whole chapter felt more like it belong to her grandfather than Tita. The only time you get to see her again is at the end of the game where everyone meets up, which I took the opportunity to have her in my party just to at least say she had some kind of purpose.

All that though didn't actually made me dislike the game. The point where I decided that I did not like this game was the final boss. It was, of all things, a giant robot. You may be thinking that a giant robot in this game is not too bad since this game's technology can make such a thing, and it does fit it, but the thing is, there is no build up for this robot. It just appears out of nowhere. Let me explain how all this builds up: Throughout the course of the game, Cassius dissapears, Joshua and Estelle decide to go on a journey to become full fledged braces while searching for Cassius, their father and end up discovering a terrorist plot. Throughout the game, the terrorist activity continue to rise and the Bright children find out that it was Col. Richards doing. You manage to get into the castle where the Queen resides and she tells you that Col. Richards wants his country to be strong so he is summoning the power of something called the Aureole, and is hoping to make use of a black orbment that seems to be connected to it. You find a strange, ancient labyrinth and discover Col. Richard at the end. He explains power is what his country needs to make his nation strong and wants to use the power of the Aureole to achive it. You fight Col. Richard and win. The Aurole activates and you fight a giant robot as your final boss.

WTF IS THAT!? How does this game go from terrorist activities, conspiracy, betrayal, power lust, anicient artifacts, to fighting a giant robot at the end? Okay, so this robot is not exactly random. The only explanation given is that it's the guardian of the Aureole and when the Aureole is activated, it will appear to eliminate threats, but that sounds like the description for a sub-boss, not the final bad guy you gotta defeat. Couldn't they come up with a better explanation for it? Like making it a prototype from the black orb or a secret weapon Col. Richards was making, or a secret weapon he stole? I mean anything that would lead to a build up up to this point? The final boss is supposed to be the culmination of everything you have worked for. Everything you have learned throughout your journey leads to this final moment that you were preparing for. I WAS NOT prepare to fight some random robot that appears out of nowhere, is super hard, and has TWO instant-death moves! Seriously, at this point, I gave up on this game and just finished just to get it over with. I did not care about the Queen's festival and just got the game over with. Thought I'll admit, the final scene with Joshua and Estelle was actually worth going through the game, but this game was such a disappointment, I am not planning on playing the second game when it comes, if it comes.

And I guess that's my review of the game, or a rant if you want to call it. I had high hopes for this game when it started after being fresh from Ys Seven, but after playing it through, I'm sticking to Ys for now on. I'm not saying it's a horrible game, or that you should not play it. I'm just saying that it's not for me. It maybe your type of game but I'm really disspointed at how it was presented.

Too bad you did not really enjoy it as much as I did.

I loved the character development. I have to agree that towards the end the "other" playable characters are not as much explored as I would have hoped but that will probably be delved into in the upcoming sequels.

I did not struggle with the end boss. As I learned by playing SMT games, it is all about buffing up your characters. The instant-death moves probably mean being underleveled. Trust me I have been in the same spot with RPGs that I just wanted to get over with and I started rushing into the final part. This made it too hard for not taking the time to grind and level up, thus making it even less enjoyable (so you see the cycle of doom here..)

In any case, I can't wait to get my hands on the English version of Second Chapter and see the story continue with these fantastic characters! I really want to see Estelle grow as a person with the developments at the final part of the game!

10/10!
