What you guys' opinions on all the classic Hudson/TurboGrafx franchise revivals that have appeared on the the WiiWare service the past few years, like Star Soldier R, Alien Crush Returns, Adventure Island: The Beginning, Military Madness: Nectaris, and the upcoming Bonk: Brink of Extinction?

I suppose Hudson started bringing these series' back due to the popularity of the TurboGrafx games on the Virtual Console. On one hand, it's kind of a nice throwback to the TurboGrafx-16 era, but at the same, they sorta seem like cheap cash-ins. What do you think, are they worthwhile?

I am looking forward to Bonk: Brink of Extinction. After New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Sonic 4: Episode I, a new Bonk game just seems natural. (Return of the 16-bit mascot wars FTW! ;) )

I tend to like them. I tried a bit of Alien Crush Returns and it looks phenomenal. Star Soldier R is also extremely fun, however I do not enjoy the time limit they put on the game. They are both home page Wii titles that I leave up as I find them to be some of the best that the Wii offers for downloadable games. Whether they are viewed as a cheap cash-in to the company themselves or as real titles, I view them personally as great titles to have for the Wii.

Thanks for replying!

I suppose they're fun for fans who have played the original games and want something new. But for someone who may be trying these series' for the first time, it might be better just go with the original games. I mean, is there any major advantage in purchasing, say, Adventure Island: The Beginning when you could get the original NES game and/or New Adventure Island?

I'd like to play the Nectaris/Military Madness one. Also, for those that don't know, there was a sequel to Military Madness in Japan called Neo Nectaris that added new units and battle scenes, as well as containing the original game. There's also a DOS one in English with some differences, and a freeware, I think, Windows 95 game with editor. The Playstation one wasn't too bad, either.

I may not have mentioned but I did try Star Solder R on the Wiiware first before Star Soldier for the Turbo-Grafx. At the time, I did not know the 2 series were related, I only saw a great shooter. It definitely told me about the series in general and I did go out and end up purchasing it on the Turbo-Grafx.

I have the points to pick up one of these, but I've been stuck on which one. Star Soldier would be a done deal but I don't get the whole time limit thing. Is it structured like the old Star Soldier/Blazing Lazers games? Guess I'll have to watch some videos and decide.

I like the idea of Developers making new classic games. Keep the original formulas and 2D but maybe bump up the graphics. They should also make them original games and not just remakes. The only wiiware game I've bought is Castlevania Rebirth which is very good, but not as good as Dracula X IMO.
