We need more moderators

I think it is time for new mods, for many reasons.

1: We are getting more and more users, which means more active users which means we need more moderators

2: Only two or three mods come on every day. There are many people who are active, long-time members who seem well qualified for the position and come on every day or so, why not make them moderators?

3: If you have seen what has been going on in the chat lately, you know the reason we need mods. More and more users are deciding that they want to troll the chat, the link to which has been taken down, and ruin the good conversation that usually goes on in there. If not mods of the forum we at least need more chat mods, or a few chat owners

4: This place needs to be as secure as possible.
I've been to other game communities, I came here from the unspeakable message board. This forum is like a sanctuary, nice people, intelligent conversation, good activity, minimal trolling, and a neighborly like connection between members.

The bigger we get, the more we have to keep in check. What do you guys think?

3)Ive started up a chat which will have stricter moderation once it gets going.

4)Agreed

The chat has been taken down there is no need to keep mentioning it. Anything that does happen there is up to the members to keep order since pete has disassociated it from the forum. You should go there at your own risk since there is no guarentee that it will be protected. You should also distinguish where you are referring to where we need mods. The chat is something totally different from the forums now so we dont even consider it anymore when it comes to moderation.

As far as the forum goes I think we could use 1 or 2 more mods since I know I and maybe a few others cant be on the forum 24/7. Perhaps some reputable people with a bit more time on thier hands would help out the situation. But overall I think myself and the other mods, including Pete, have been doing an excellent job for all the members and posts there are considering there are only a handful of us. You guys need to keep in mind there are almost 90,000 forum posts and 3,000 members for only a handful of people to moderate.

Another thing, more than 3 of us are on a day. I think all the mods come on at least once a day. Me, shaq, browland, pete, nostalgia, are all on at least once a day from what ive seen.

And believe it or not we do discuss what is going on in the forum whether you guys believe it or not.

Personally, I think we don't need a lot of new mods. I mean, there's not a lot of bad things going on around this site. I think we have enough mods. But that's just me.

This has recently been discussed and we are considering adding one or two new moderators. From my perspective, we have had some problems with trolling in the past but it is now limited to isolated incidents that we usually catch quickly and the fire is put out before it spreads. I don't think having a legion of mods is necessary but I do see value in having one or two more.

I think the chat is where the most prevalent problem existed and I'm glad it was taken down. Sorry to anyone who liked it or saw potential in keeping it, but it was a troll fest and I was receiving PMs and hearing complaints about trolling on a daily basis. More moderators on the chat would have have provided only marginal relief, since the maximum that a troll can be banned for is 6 hours. In the end, it was more of a headache than anything and it had to go.

Also, I'm usually on there throughout the day. I have a work PC that's constantly fired up and I surf this forum and other sites in order to fight of boredom at work. I also know that NostalgiaKing and a few others are on here periodically, so between us the trolls are usually snuffed out fast.

To expand on what KBK said, we have a private sub-forum that only moderators can access and we discuss forum issues and suggestions and see what needs to be done. This woks well and it allows us to collectively decide what needs to be done in a situation, be it a problem member who is going to get banned or a suggestion that will be implemented. I know it might not always seem like we read suggestions or act quickly on things others deem important, but we definitely discuss things and take action behind the scenes.

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

I'm actually on all the time; if I'm home, and I'm on the computer (which is... well, all the time) then I'm on these forums. It's just that the forum takes you off of the online users list if you haven't changed pages in 15 minutes. I also check the forums in a different internet browser anonymously periodically, so... yeah, haha.

I'm glad the chat has been disassociated with these boards. I know some people liked them and had fun there, but it seems the vast majority of people were having quite the opposite expierence. It'll most likely take care of a huge portion of complaints browland1 receives from users.

I don't think we need more mods at this point in time. Yes we have had some troll attacks, but they were stopped swiftly. Unfortunately I have been unable to come on the site very often as my main laptop is broken.

In light of the increased membership and the forum getting more exposure due to the AGG podcast, one or two more mods can't hurt. We also have some pissed off trolls that will likely make further attempts to attack the forum, so an extra set of eyes to catch this is probably a good idea.

Personally I don't think the forum needs any more moderators since the activity isn't always fast. I mean there's normally about 10-15 people at once on the site and Im sure even one of the moderators keep watch over the forum then. Most members here are very sensible and any possibility of a troll outbreak is quickly jumped on by mods like a fly on sh*t. Its the decision of the mods if they need an extra pair of eyes on the site anyway though.

Something about inactive news gurus was mentioned, I think some people who want to be gurus and aren't yet should be given a chance.

I honestly believe taking down the chat wasn't a good idea.
I mean, some of the best discussion on the site was on there, and it was a very friendly place with great conversation. It also made it easier to do community things that require faster response time (Say, organizing someone to be a guest host on a podcast, etc.). The trolls, when they do come on, are usually not too subtle or intelligent with their goings. If someone impersonates someone else, it's usually pretty easy to see through it. And though mods can only ban for six hours, I think that's a long enough time. I mean, it takes about two seconds to click their name and click "Ban". The annoyance that causes is little compared to the value of the chat. Luckily, the actual forums are not attacked very often, and when they are the mods do a good job of handling it very fast. I personally think we should bring back the chat (Yeah I know it still exists, but it's pretty much dead) and get one or two of the most active people on there to be chat owners to give it a lot of protection.

The official chat is never coming back get over it and it was removed for good reason there was too many trolls ruining it and only owners can ban permanetly and pete is way too busy to go on the chat , The annoyance was pretty big on petes chat as soon as the trolls came on everyone left the chat.

First off, tone yourself down buddy. :ermm:

Second, it doesn't take Pete getting on the chat to stop the trolls.
Like I explained, it takes about 2 seconds to ban them for 6 hours, not annoying at all. All it takes is one or two dedicated mods to keep it well secure.

Theres nothing wrong with my tone i was just stating facts

the chat died once before for the exact same reason and to be honest i dont think pete wants his forums associated with it.

Its more trouble than its worth

Maybe to you, but me and several others use the chat as a hangout spot.
It was a valuable place that deserves to stay. It does not have to stay down. Simple moderation can make it great again. Not that hard.

I am all for having the chat but the same problems are going to arise as it did last time theres no way to prevent it

Really is there enough long time members who would want to be a moderator on the chat.

Sure simple moderation will make it better but thats what got said last year when the first chat got took off.

I understand where you're coming form and I wish we could have kept the chat as well. Sadly, the chat system used is very flawed and it's weaknesses can easily be exploited by trolls. The maximum you can ban someone for is 6 hours and there is nothing to stop them from creating a new account or just resetting their IP and continuing.

We tried to have a chat before, but it didn't work because the trolls made it intolerable and there was no effective way to moderate it and keep them out. The second time it was brought back, same problem, as well as in-fighting between reputable members was starting to creep in. I was getting frequent PMs from people complaining about the chat and I can't view it as being anything other than a big headache. I hate this situation as much as you guys do and I would love to hang out and chat, but unfortunately it's come to this and there is no value in having a chat if all we get from it is problems.

As Pete said above, on a similar note anyway, something like ustream or another method works very well. While gamesandme was still active on youtube if anyone remembers, we had a ustream chat that was great because moderators could ban people permanently, and you could even IP ban people so even with a new name they couldn't get in. They'd have to go through the trouble of hiding their IP address and even then it was clear once the person was in who they were and they would be banned again.
