I was so glad to see the new reviews posted, especially Ys Books I & II! Ys was part of my introduction to CD-ROM gaming back in the day, and being a huge anime fan even at that time, it just blew me away! Cinematic cutscenes, great voice acting, pick up and play action, and arguably the best video game soundtrack ever created, sold me on the power of the Turbo! I had predicted this game getting 4 stars due to the style of play, and especially the limited four directional movement, but I was more than pleased to see that it received that coveted level 5 ranking! Too bad the remakes for the PC and Nintendo DS fall short of the Turbo version's greatness. If you loved Ys I & II, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Ys IV! The graphics are improved, including many more portaits and cutscenes, but above all else you can move in all eight directions. The soundtrack isn't as good as the original, but still pretty cool, and the game overall is an excellent sequel to an already excellent game. Favorite music tracks from Ys I & II (straight from the disc): 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 18, 19, 21 (before and after the narration), 23 As for the other reviews, I agree that Space Harrier was a good port, and Final Lap Twin definitely gets points for the RPG mode. Trivia: In Space Harrier, on stage 6 there is an enemy that is obviously a Valkyrie/Veritech in fighter mode! Screenshot: ![]() Edited by Naniyue, Dec 12 2010, 10:01 PM.

Additional: The Ys soundtrack has been redone many times, including with a full orchestra. If you are interested, take a look online for them. I personally prefer the Turbo's tracks though, as well as the PSG music for the shrine. Edit: Track 2 from Ys Symphony 95 has a nice rendition of track 5 from the Turbo CD. I had honestly never played an Ys game before. However, the review really went over some great points about it, and the soundtrack sold me. I'm definitely going to give it a shot, hopefully on the Duo

I just submitted a quick review for Ys I & II on Amazon. It hasn't been approved yet, but looks like this: Ys Books I & II is a true masterpiece of video gaming! While it has had several remakes over the years, the Turbografx-16 version is the only one to have received consistently high praise, not only for its addictive gameplay and interesting storyline, but for arguably the best video game soundtrack ever! This game has POWER, unlike anything released on its contemporaries, the Genesis and Super Nintendo. Fantasy gamers, you OWE yourselves the Ys experience! If you need more convincing, watch the professionally done "Turbo Views" review online! |

Games like this make me REALLY hope I find a CD expansion soon.......I can't drop the dough that the Duo is going for, I could prolly afford the CD unit itself, but always seem to get outbid on eBay by only a few bucks whenever one comes up. |
