Its amazing how different the podcast feels now with editing. Its so fast now, im gaming terms the lag is completely gone. The dead air is gone. Audio quality is perfect. The actual show content itself is good as usual, but its the editing in this episode that really stands out more than anything else. |

I've listened to all the All-Gen podcast and I have to say that you guys are the best. Really interesting topics covering almost every aspect of retro gaming. Just thought I'd give you guys a little insight into what might be the strangest arcade you will ever find. It's smack dab in the middle of North Korea in Pyongyang. I've seen Soviet arcades but this one is something new. Link |

Haven't heard the episode in its entirety yet. So far it's excellent. But as a music producer myself I can hear the compression working and has brought up some of the noise and from listening has possibly put in a noise gate so sounds choppy when someone stop talking, a little annoying for myself but definitely not a massive thing. I don't mean to offend the brilliant work Jason has done it definitely sounds clear and mastered but there's some things you cant get rid of, hurry up technology get better faster!

The audio quality improvement is very noticeable, best episode in that respect BY FAR! Great job by Jason. I've been on a real arcade game kick lately so I was very happy to see an episode about this. I just built a bar-top mame cabinet and I have to say it's one of the best gaming investments I've ever made. Having an arcade at home really plays into the "casual" aspect since they're designed to be played quickly in little chunks, so it's an accessible alternative to more involved console games. Fantastic discussion, very interesting. |

Really great show as I stated in the other "improved audio" thread. I love all that is arcade gaming, so it was great having a show discuss the hobby at length. I just hope John J. didn't scare too many people away with his horror stories about repairing the mon's hah. While I agree, it's much better to be able to work on these things yourself, I don't think they break enough to really worry about it all that much. Most people aren't going to leave their machines running for 12 hours a day everyday like an arcade would. So most of the time the machines will run for many years without issue. And if you do have to pay someone to repair a monitor, you shouldn't have to do it all that often. (again unless you are running your machines for many many hours everyday). I have owned about 5 machines over the past decade or so and I have yet to need a cap kit. Only thing I have ever needed to replace was a power supply on my Tron, but that was my fault for leaving it on for 3 days straight hah. |

Hey everyone, Jason here! I just wanted to thank everyone in here that has posted feedback! I am happy to be on board with AGG, ut I'm also very stoked to be using my skill to help improbe the Audio. It isn't easy as we use skype (as we have mentioned before) but overall its night and day difference listening to what it was before! Im glad you guys also like the intro and appreciate the editing to make it a smooth show throughout. Thanks for your support! -Jason http://www.youtube.com/user/TheEMUreview?feature=mhum Edited by TheEMUreview, Sep 9 2010, 12:34 PM.

Hey ap3xultima, I wanted to reply to you about this and clear anything up you may be wondering about.. Yes you can hear the compression working, the podcast episodes are heavily compressed.. Due to how we are recording it, and with the everyones different setups with gear, it has to be to sound good. Have you listened to radio at all? Or satellite radio before? This is the way broadcast audio works. It is designed to be front row and in your face for a reason. Listen to any professional show, this is the same process. This one is more unique due to them usually always having 4-6 guests at a time, and this causes noticeable issues you may not hears on some 1 on 1 or 3 people podcasts. As we mentioned before we are using Skype to communicate, there is with no doubt going to be a large noise floor to deal with. I have a noise gate on the tracks, but it only cuts where there are pauses, and well.. I edited most of the pauses out, but the small gaps were taken care of by the gate. I hope I was able to clear this up for you a bit, as you said there is no way to have it perfect as nothing ever is. Not even the best technology can make things this way. Wouldn't it be sweet if they could all fly out to my studio every week and do the recording here with my gear, in the same room? Keep the donations coming guys I brought it up as a joke the other day, its not really possible Enjoy the show everyone!-Jay |

First off, thanks to Pete and Gamester for having me on. It was a blast! Seriously. Would love to have you guys on our podcast some time. And, would love to come back if you'll have me! ![]() Flynnz, I think it's possible that you have had some good luck! Or, I have had some bad luck! However, I don't think that's the case for me. Monitors are a MAJOR part of the hobby. Sure, it's likely that you could get lucky and have a few machines that never have monitor issues, I have a handful of those myself. But, an overwhelming number of these 30 year old games have monitor issues or develop monitor issues after you acquire them. It's also possible that the owner you bought the game from had already fixed any recent issues. I am constantly pulling games out of old operator warehouses, etc. Power supplies and monitors are the weakest links on these games. Some games have other specific weak points like bad sockets on chips, etc. But, trust me.. I hang out with a large group of collectors and all a lot of us do is constantly battle these topics. Also, we have been stocking up on old monitors lately cause they don't make them anymore! You can't really buy new CRTs anymore too. Wells Gardner, one of the biggest producers of these arcade monitors and one of the only companies left standing, no longer makes CRTs, they went 100% LCD. Which, looks like GARBAGE in a 15k arcade game. There are 1 maybe 2 companies that make cheap Chinese ones and these crappy monitors are pricey! Also, when you have about 30-35 games you really get a clear picture about percentages and failure rates on certain things. But, it's not all doom and gloom! Fortunately most monitors only need cap kits and once you get comfortable working on a monitor it's not hard to do. And, neither is replacing an aging power supply with a modern switching power supply. There are plenty of resources that also make adapters to place a modern power supply in your old game plug and play. It's all totally worth the effort and the hobby is VERY rewarding and fun. I really love tinkering with stuff and also enjoy figuring out stuff and how to fix it. I am sure you could buy a very expensive "reconditioned" game from one of these retail stores and be perfectly happy with it for many years to come. But for me, it's all about buying these old classics that have sat in some warehouse for 10 years and nursing it back to life. It's an absolute hobby to me and I just love it. So, I strongly encourage anyone that is interested to take a chance on a broken complete original game, it can be very rewarding and an awesome learning experience to get it going. And, as you learn how to fix it you'll be that much smarter if it breaks again (and it will!) ![]() Like I said, it's all totally worth it.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by blkdog7, Sep 9 2010, 02:12 PM.

Ah yeah I forgot about broadcasting compression, actually makes sense now to why you processed it that way. Either way after a while it became unnoticeable since I got used to it. Now....who will invent the teleporter? |

It's possible to not hear the compression if you don't go crazy with it. I tend to back off a little and not squash it too much. |

@John J hey thanks for the reply! Yeah I totally understand what you mean. But I was just saying that most people probably wont have the volume of games you do (did I mention I am jealous? lol). So I think for most people, they probably wont have to worry about that stuff all that often if they have a few machnes...and if they do run into issues, having a machine or 2 need a new mon isn't that big of a deal. Sadly doing a cap kit is one of those things I think a lot of people are scared to do. On a side note, I have been subbed to your channel for a long time, and I would LOVE to see some repair vids man. You really know your stuff and I think your channel would make a great resource for people who do want to learn the repair side of things. Anyway, great show and thanks for replying. |

By far the best podcast so far guys, Then again I love my arcades. The audio was alot better but I heard the compression pumping like a mofo on my sub. On my crappy work speakers I didn't notice much. John (blkdog7) was a great guest. I got to meet him a few weeks back at an arcade party which was a good time. For who haven't listened to his postcast, I highly recommend the Video Game Outsiders. |

+1! @blkdog7 - Great hearing from a fellow arcade collector! I've been in the scene for about 7 years now! I bought a SFII machine right after highschool (which is hilarious considering I probably purchased the machine for far less than the amount of money I poured into it previously!), but it wasn't until after college that I really got into the hobby. No joke on the monitor issues. Though, once you are less afraid of it you can make out pretty good on some deals when people are selling cabs for cheap because the monitor is out I got an original PacMan cab for FREE this way!Regarding the LCD monitors, I've never used an LCD monitor that was specifically designed for arcade applications, but I do have experience with proper upscaling of low resolution video and it can be done beautifully (i.e. pixel perfect, no blurriness). There are some nice upscalers on the market like the XRGB series from Micomsoft (not Microsoft) that can even add scanlines to the image for that authentic CRT feel ![]() @ Gamester81 & TheEMUreview - howdy neighbors! I didn't realize you guys were local Phoenix boys Let me know if you guys want to put together some local events or just hang out!-ud |
