LINK This week we are joined by John Thacker, a Neo Geo expert and the man behind the official Neo Geo "Master List" on www.neo-geo.com as well as the Digital Press rarity and price guide for the Neo Geo. Ever wonder why Neo Geo games cost so much? Whats the difference between AES and MVS? What would possess someone to spend $55,000 on two video games? Or do you have no clue about Neo Geo as a whole? This episode will help alleviate all of your burning questions! Edited by PeteDorr, Sep 1 2010, 06:12 PM.

Great episode guys! Hey, Pete, don't be intimidated by collecting Neo-Geo! John is right about the early releases for the Neo Geo, they are actually very affordable. Back when this came out, I was about 12, I had a Genesis and I loathed the Neo-Geo ads.(But secretly loved the games) This thing had coverage in magazines like anything else. There was no damn way I could afford it. You could actually walk into a Babbages or Software ETC (these were retail stores)and the games would be shelved in all their $200 glory! I knew a kid in high school who had this thing, he invited me over to play it and something in me snapped! (Think of Lord of the Rings) About 1994.5 I walk into a game shop, a Neo Geo AES is sitting in a box in the corner. I tell the shop owner, "I'll trade my Sega Genesis and Sega CD system with the all the games for that system." He was like, "Sure." I never looked back! |

Great episode. I learned a lot about the Neo Geo a system I really didn't know anything about. I do have a question for the next episode. In my collection I have a lot of ports of games. It makes it much easier to play a lot of titles I would not get to play otherwise. I know the PSP and DS have their share or ports as well at compilations. What is your favourite port of this generation? |

Excellent 'cast, as usual. Very nice to hear from someone who lives up to the title of "expert." I've told this story on a few forums, but I'll post it here, as it seems appropriate ![]() Right out of college I was helping a friend find a good/cheap/used mountain bike and I had heard about these local police seizure / surplus auctions, so I thought that might be a good place to look for one. While I was there I noticed a pallet of old radio equipment and stuff and there in the midst of it was a NeoGeo AES system w/ two original sticks, Samurai Showdown 2, video cable, and the AC adapter, all taped together in a bundle. I bid on the pallet but got beat out by some good ol' boy (read boss hog looking dude; probably wanted some more CB equipment for his truck ). I figured the guy had no clue what the thing was so after the auction I asked him if he'd sell me the "game system" out of his pile o' stuff. The whole time I was thinking to myself "$20 please, $20!" So, the guy replies, "How about $20." Works like a champ to this day (although, the sticks get more action on my supergun than they do on the AES, heh).As far as stores go, Game Dude in CA (which, if you didn't know, is probably the largest brick and mortar used game store in the US) still carries AES stuff. I don't know that the prices are reasonable, but they are available on the shelf, nonetheless. Also, Bookmans used media stores in AZ gets pretty much everything under the sun at some point and I saw two complete AES games there the other day. Nothing exciting, but they were only like $15 a piece, which ain't bad for any AES game, IMO. -ud |

Wow Refathegreat, I traded the best games at the time: I had Lunar the Silver Star, Silpheed, Final Fight, The Wolfteam games like Road Avenger for the Cd. On cartridge I had stuff like Gunstar Hereos, Landstalker, Thunder Force 4. These were all top-shelf games back then. I think in all, it was about 30 titles! In return for all this I got the Neo-geo system with 2 controllers and Nam 1975. |

I did not know much about the Neo Geo AES and MVS. After watching this video i know quite a bit about these systems. I probably never will purchase one. I am settling for the PS2 SNK compilations. The Metal Slug collection is an awesome collection so far.I listened to the entire episode tonight. Great episode guys. |

I was working out while listening to this podcast, which is pretty good so far (still haven't listened to the whole thing), and John was talking about the intimidating forums of Neo geo. I burst out laughing when he said "oh feel free to post there, I'm sure you'll get people who will help you if you're a newbie...and even if they don't just email me". That's pretty bad when he expects no one to help you! haha

The Neo Geo really should have done something different, because back in days when it was out I never even heard of it, never seen one before, and never even knew anyone who owned one. Not a very good sign for a console. I first heard/read about the Neo Geo was when I started my subscription to Gamepro in '95. |

It was always a niche machine even when it was marketed by SNK in the magazines. By 1995, you really weren't going to find it in stores, but Gamepro would still reveiw games for it. Its cool if you go back and see ads and reviews for the Neo. Electronic Gaming Monthly gave The King of Fighters 94 "Game of the Month" in one issue. Not bad for a system nobody had! |

Yeah , dumpweed, I agree about their marketing. I just couldn't believe anyone would pay $200 for a freakin' video game back then. The Neo Geo AES was basically a vehicle to play MVS games at home. I didn't think this game system was worth until Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury 2 and World Hereos 2 came out. These were $200 games but hell, in those times Genesis and Super NES games were getting to be a pretty penny too. Chrono Trigger was $100! Phantasy 4, a 40 megabit game, $100 dollars in a paper box! |

That is one thing I miss about the 90's though, companies taking a risk and trying something different. Today, there is way too much money involved to try anything other than the mainstream. Not only that it also feels like there is a lot more greed involved in the industry today.

There are some great games today, but my feelings about the game industry are not as strong as it was in the 90's. Game systems like the Neo, 3do, Turbo Duo, Atari Jaguar, and such were reviewed on by their own merits, and weren't just outright dissed or marginalized because they weren't the "Big 3."(Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) |
