i suppose it depends on what your looking for. But i have to say that is the craziest statement ive ever heard about the ps1 in my life. Mind you it is all opinion and everything.

I agree the 16bit era was better than the the 32bit era and the saturn did have better 2d graphics but i still dont get what you mean about it being unreliable. The ps2+3 are definetly unreliable but the ps1 is an unstoppable beast. I've seen a lot of ps1s take a lot of punishment and still run fine, same with the n64 actually.

I dont think a lot of games have actually aged well from that era either, not the 3d ones anyway. Abes oddysee, symphony of the night, streetfighter alpha 2 all still look really impressive. Resident evil, gran turismo, virtua fighter and daytona usa not so much.

:n64: N64 all the way, grew up with it as a little guy, didn't experience PS1 classics until much later when I bought my first non-nintendo console besides genesis in 2006, a PS2. Great games for both, the N64's strong suit is definitely action/adventure, platformers, party games ie. Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 1-3, original Smash Bros., etc. The PS1's strong suit is no doubt the RPG's available for the system ie. FF7-9, Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, etc.

While the PS1 had many, many more games and outsold the N64 by more than 3:1, the N64 will always reign supreme because of the number of quality and memorable titles released on the console. The PS1 had it's fair share of great games too, but nothing can compare to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Banjoo-Kazooie, and the many other legendary titles released on the N64, and let's not forget which system redefined console multiplayer.. -_-

I was early in high school when the decision came whether or not to get a PS1 of N64 for Christmas. I picked a PS1. At that point it appeared to be the more "adult" console. Atleast what I saw of the N64 seemed to be targeting a much younger generation. My little sister got a N64 shortly after so I had both in the house and I remember Mario 64, Golden Eye, Crusing USA, Ocarina of Time, and WCW/NWO Revenge being fun and unlike anything on the PS1 but aside from those titles I had no use for the N64. To be fair about a year after I got the PS1 I quit gaming for about 8 years.

I loved the 8 and 16-bit eras but by the N64/PS1 generation(maybe it was my age) was really no fun for me. Was there actually a console war of that generation? I don't remember it if there was and it certainly couldn't have been anything like the 16-bit war.

Well, seeing as how I was a kid fortunate enough to have both, back then I definitely got more use out of my N64. My PS1 I had games like Spyro, Croc, Tomba, you know, games of that sort, but on the N64 I had games like Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, and Mario 64.

True, I didn't have some of PS's greatest games like FFVII or MGS, but I still have my N64 hooked up to this day and still play it. That should speak volumes.

I think that, for the vast majority, their pick will be the console that they had in their childhoods. That said, I prefer the N64. Granted, the library was smaller, but there were so many AMAZING titles. I feel as though the PS1 had many good and great titles, but none that really rival Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie... but that's just my opinion :)

The "winner" is obviously a relative term and can be a matter of personal opinion. Is it the console that sold the most? that had had the most quality titles? that had the BEST title? etc. etc. Honestly, I don't care. I just know that this was an amazing time to be a gamer. I had both consoles, and I loved them both dearly. The SNES introduced me to RPG's, but the Playstation solidified my love for them with games like Xenogears, Grandia, Parasite Eve, and yes, even FFVII. The N64 made me a believer that games in 3D were truly the future. The first time playing Super Mario 64 was mind blowing, I had never that sense of freedom in any other game before. Games like Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, and Banjo Kazooie are some of the memorable to me as well. Overall, If i had choose I would say both won in their own way.

I can probably write a novel detailing all different games during this era that had an impact in my life, but i'll spare you all the wall of text.

But I would also like to mention the Sega Saturn, which was around during this time and had some amazing games of it's own such as Nights, Panzer Dragoon, and the more complete console port of Duke Nukem 3D. It's too bad Sonic X-treme never officially released, or that Grandia wasn't localized on the Saturn. Makes you wonder if they would have helped Sega Succeed more during this era.

The N64 has a MUCH better library of games. I don't understand how so many people say that the PS1 was superior...

The N64 had better racers, adventure games, platformers, puzzle games, shooters, fps and fighters. Sure the Ps1 had the RPGs, but that's just one genre of game. I prefer to have a wide variety of games.

Also the controller is amazing. Sure people say it gives them cramps, but that never happened to me. And to be completely honest I couldn't play the ps1 for extended periods of time because the controller is so terrible. And look at the difference in game quality, PS1 was decent..but the N64 was the first console to give me the next gen feeling. Quality over quantity I always say.
