Many people have been asking, and they shall receive. Talk about various musical artists here. Music you are really into, music you wanna get into, or music you just don't understand. |

Maybe you are listening to the wrong hip-hop/rap? Try things like Public Enemy, Run DMC, and N.E.R.D. I'm more of a metal guy myself, but I really dig these guys. |

It's hard for me to choose a favorite band right now. I would usually say Opeth but since I've been getting back into music, it's really hard to say if Opeth will remain at that position. I will say what my favorite bands are right now. I should say bands I've been listening to the most as of recently. -Charred Walls of the Damned -Nile -Iced Earth -Mastodon |

I know what you mean. I was never "in to" music but I've just recently started listening to a lot of it. I can listen to just about any genre. Metal (Some kinds, loving Folk Metal at the moment) to Rap to Punk to Reggae. But out of all the bands and different genres, Blink is the one I consistently make a return to and can listen to forever. Overall I'd say my favorite genres of music are Punk/Pop Punk and Classic Rock. Do you, or anyone for that matter, have high end audiophile equipment for their music? I'm just getting into the high end audio scene. I'm going to invest into a nice pair of headphones and amp. |

I really like Orange Goblin. I mean, for a sludge/stoner metal sound they kick some ass. I don't smoke weed so I won't "be trippin", but I do enjoy some of their stuff. |

Yeah there's tons of great Hip Hop out there. That's my main genre. But I have such extensive tastes it isn't even funny. Allow me to educate: The Roots - The Roots have been my favorite musical act for a series of years. Their rapper, Black Thought, is one of my favorite rappers, if not just my flat-out favorite. They're interesting for the fact that they're a band. They use samples, but you're gonna find them playing their instruments more often. Their drummer, ?uestlove, is one of the most multi-talented people in the music business. Black Thought's rhymes tend to be complex and poetic, and totally demolish any Hip Hop stereotypes you may have had previously. He's got everything a good MC needs. Lyrics, charisma, flow. It's all there. They have a new album coming out this year, called "How I Got Over", and are getting more exposure nowadays because they're the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They're a fucking gem of a Jazzy band. Recommended albums: ALL OF THEM ARE FLAWLESS. But my personal top 3 are Do You Want More?!!!??!, Illadelph Halflife, and Things Fall Apart. OutKast - You've probably at least heard of these guys. Shame they're so well known for Hey Ya! and Way You Move. Which are good enough songs, but they're WAY fucking better than that. Compromised of rappers Andre 3000 and Big Boi, they're pretty experimental. Their songs are filled with influences of psychedelia, soul, and just that pure southern funk. But also come back to pure sick rhymes. They do everything, from spoken word tracks, to singing (like Hey Ya), and just flat out awesome rapping. They're my favorite RAPPING duo (Not DJ/Rapper) of all time. Their chemistry together is flawless. Recommended albums: Another flawless one. But my 3 favorites are ATLiens, Aquemini, and Stankonia. Gangstarr - Now this here is probably my favorite DJ/Rapper duo. Composed of producer DJ Premier, and the late MC Guru, they are pioneers in the Jazz-Rap genre, which is pretty much my personal favorite type of music. Premier is usually viewed as the finest beat maker in Hip Hop history, and I agree. He's also a damn fine DJ and turntablist (which is an art within itself!) And Guru was an excellent MC. He was known affectionately in the Hip Hop community as "The King of Monotone" due to the sound of his voice. He passed away April 19, 2010. After a long battle with cancer. Sadly, a Gangstarr reunion will never be possible. Recommended albums: Yet again, spotless. 3 favorites here are Moment of Truth, Step In The Arena, and Daily Operation. A Tribe Called Quest - Also pioneers in the Jazz-Rap genre. Gaining fame around the same time as Gangsta Rap on the West Coast was becoming popular, A Tribe Called Quest, along with the whole Native Tongues collective in the late 80's to late 90's, focused on black power and positivity, with heavy Soul and Jazz samples, instead of the violent rhymes and whiny synth funk of their peers on the other side of the country. Compromised of MC/Producer Q-Tip, MC Phife Dawg, and DJ/Producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad (An MC known as Jarobi White was present on their first album, but left afterwords.) Tribe represents what Hip Hop is all about, and continues to do so to this day, since all 4 reunited in 2006. Recommended albums: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Marauders. But all are good. De La Soul - Fellow members of the Native Tongues Posse, and my second favorite Hip Hop group of all time, De La Soul are the absolute shit. They've been rocking it for over 20 years. They're known for their quirky rhymes and elective sampling. Members are Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo. All three are Rappers/Producers. Prince Paul was considered a fourth unoffical member, producing the entirety of their first three albums. They have since went on to collaborate with legendary producers such as 9th Wonder, Jake One, and the late great J Dilla. Recommended albums: Another spotless one. Three favorites are 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul is Dead, and The Grind Date. The Pharcyde - The Pharcyde are a group from California. At the time they came about, Gangsta Rap was dominating the West Coast. And these guys were a nice and jazzy alternative. Not to mention they're funny as hell. Members are Imani, Bootie Brown, Slimkid3, and Fatlip. Their producer for the first album was J-Swift, but he left for personal problems. J Dilla produced most of their second album. They have two more albums, and have reunited in recent years, no new album has been planned, but there have been tours. Recommended albums: Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia The Freestyle Fellowship - These guys are my favorite Hip Hop group of all time. Another dope jazzy Los Angeles collective who were around during the Gangsta Rap area, but these guys are just straight lyrical monsters. And freestyle kings of the world. They're lyrics are similar to the Native Tongues over on the east. Positive and black. My personal favorite member is Aceyalone, he's definitely a top 5 MC of all time, in my opinion. Other members are Myka 9, P.E.A.C.E., and Self Jupiter. They're part of the LA based Project Blowed collective. Recommended albums: To Whom It May Concern and Innercity Griots Blackstar - Compromised of rappers Mos Def & Talib Kweli. Both have become very successful as solo artists, but their single album as Blackstar is still there most memorable moment for a lot of people. Personally I prefer Mos' first solo album, Black on Both Sides, but Black Star itself is genius. We can only hope for a reunion. And soon. It's been 12 years. Recommended album: Mos Def & Talib Kweli are...Blackstar MF DOOM - Daniel Dumile is a mysterious cat. He started out in the early 90's with his brother, producer Subroc, and a few other MC's in the group KMD as Zev Love X. But his brother was hit by a car several years later, in which Daniel vanished in New York, until re-rising in the late 90's as the masked MF DOOM. DOOM is known for his excellent production and abstract rhyme style. He has worked with several well known rappers and producers such as Ghostface Killah & J Dilla, as well his most famous (and best) material, with California producer, Madlib, under the name Madvillain Recommend albums: Operation: Doomsday, MM...FOOD?, and Madvillainy (With Madlib) But I suppose you wanna hear some young blood to, eh? Rappers who have surfaced (or become better known) in the past few years? Well, you got it. Blu - Blu is a young California rapper who dropped his debut album, Below the Heavens, with producer Exile in 2007, at the age of 21 or so I believe. With wisdom beyond his years and the gift for deep and poetic rhymes, Blu is one of the best rappers out right now. And will go on to do many great things. Below the Heavens is a classic. Recommended album: Below the Heavens (With Exile) CYNE - CYNE is a Hip Hop group from Florida. The group is two producers (Enoch & Speck) and two MC's (Akin & Cise Starr.) They're sound includes influences of Rock, Jazz, and Trip-Hop. One of the finest Hip Hop groups out today. Recommended albums: Evolution Fight & Water for Mars Jay Electronica - Jay is a pretty nice MC, he has a pretty creative and expressive rhyming style. He's pretty well liked and respect from what I've seen, and I can say that I have both for him. Unfortunately he hasn't put out a whole album yet. Brother Ali - Brother Ali is probably my favorite white rapper. Not to say there aren't plenty of white boys who can rock the mic, but this guy is deep, dope, poetic, and consistent. He's nice. Recommended albums: The Undisputed Truth, Us, and Shadows on the Sun Panacea - Panacea is a straight throwback to the Native Tongues era. Dope Jazzy production with positive rhymes. Members are producer K-Murdock and MC Raw Poetic. Recommended albums: The Scenic Route & Ink is my Drink Scholarman - Scholarman isn't as well known as some of the cats I've posted above, but he's just as fucking dope. Another straight throwback to the "Golden Age" of Hip Hop, he's one of the realest rappers I've ever heard. And a talented soulful producer to boot. His rhymes are extremely deep, poetic, smart, and hopeful. I've bought all this albums, and is the last artist I've done so with in a very long time. Support his music. Recommended albums: Soul Purpose, Candy Medicine, and Free Spirit of a Troubled Soul Ohene - Ohene is even less known, but just as dope. And an extremely talented dude. He's also very real, and discusses similar issues as Scholarman. He's classically trained in piano, and even writes his rhymes backwards in the mirror. Really dope! Recommended album: Innercity Soul Whoo. That took awhile. I think that's good for tonight. That's just a TINY TINY sample of what's dope out there, man. Old and new. I'll probably do this again in a few days. Haha |

@Mshkote Great post man. @Direngrey911 Can you give some examples of industrial bands? I'm not really sure what that genre is to be honest. Is it bands like Atari Teenage Riot and Delta9? Or am I waaaay off?:p Big L. Big L’s career was cut short after he got shot in 1999. His first single “Devil’s Son” in 93 (I think) proved that he was way ahead of his time when it came to lyrical abilities. You can hear his free-flowing non-forced multisyllable metaphor punchline rhyming, which he perfected on his first (and possibly only solo album he worked on from start to finish) Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous in 1995, which in my opinion is one of the best albums of all time, where rappers as Jay-Z and Cam’ron featured. The production is mid-90s NY sample based tracks by Lord Finesse, Showbiz, Buckwild and Craig Boogie. After his death “The Big Picture” got released in 2000, but it seems like an incomplete work, still Big L has some good verses on it. Devils son: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUawT_tl7sg All Black: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U1UN4P9Mnw&feature=fvst Danger Zone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbvyqjEnLns Vordul Mega. One half of the infamous underground group Cannibal Ox, and in my opinion the duos best MC by far. The album “The Cold Vein” (2001) produced by El-P (and one track by RJD2) is a classic, and the song “Vein” remains one of my favorite songs to this day (Vordul has the first and third verse). The duo released their last song “From the Planet of Eat” which is an amazing goodbye to their collaboration with EL-P. In 2004 Vordul released his first solo album, Revolution of the Yung Havoks, and the same year he released Yung World. Vordul is known for his abstract almost street-poetic approach to rap, a lot of multi syllables and often monotone but emotional delivery.
