Sega Does What Nintendon't

It's Thinking 9.9.99![]() General Info After the overall failure of the Saturn, Sega thought they would get the jump on everyone and release there sixth generation console way before any of the competition. November 27th 1998 the Dreamcast was launched in Japan. Sega started off on the wrong foot due to not being able to meet console demands in Japan at launch. NEC was producing the graphics chip for the Dreamcast and they wasn't able to meet Sega's demands. Almost one year later in North America 9-9-99 the Dreamcast launches. Sega's North American team had the console hyped up to the max and everyone was wanting Sega's new console. The Dreamcast had over 300 thousand preorders for its launch in North America towering above the previous record of 100 thousand set by the PlayStation 1. Four days after the North American launch Sega had sold 372 thousand units yielding a very successful launch but there was a dark cloud forming over Sega called the PlayStation 2. Only a few months after the Dreamcast launched in North America Sony showcased there upcoming system the PlayStation 2 promising to be more powerful than the Dreamcast and to include a DVD player as well as backward compatibility with the PlayStation 1. Sony was really marketing how there new system was much more powerful than the Dreamcast and I am sure this really put a dent in the number of units Sega sold. On October 26, 2000 the PlayStation 2 was launched in Japan, right around the time when DVD's started becoming popular there. Since the PS2 included a DVD player the Dreamcast almost all at once stopped moving units. Sega tried dropping the price of the Dreamcast and offered different bundled packages but not having a DVD player killed the Dreamcast. The following year Sega stops producing Dreamcast units and makes the move to being a software company only. Up-close with Dreamcast ![]() The Dreamcast has 4 controller ports built into the system. On the rear of the console it has AC input, Serial, AV Out, and Line input for the 56k modem. ![]() The modem was removable and you could buy a Ethernet unit for faster connections online. ![]() Online With Sega The Dreamcast really was ahead of its time being able to go online right out of the box. You could buy a keyboard and a mouse for your Dreamcast to be able to surf the web or play online games with. ![]() The Web Browser is what you can use to surf the net with your Dreamcast. ![]() There where many online games as well for the Dreamcast Phantasy Star Online being the most popular and one of the first games of its type for a console. ![]() Dreamcast Controller ![]() ![]() Rumble Unit for Dreamcast Controller ![]() Dreamcast VMU (Visual Memory Unit) With the Dreamcast's VMU not only could save your games but you could use the built in screen for gaming. If you were playing a sports game with some friends you can pick your plays using the screen on the VMU and no one could tell what you where picking. On games like Sonic Shuffle you could look at your cards on the VMU screen with no one being able to see them. Some games would use the VMU to help with finding treasure like in Sky's of Arcadia. You could also use the VMU without the controller and play little mini games anywhere. ![]()

Up To 6 Billion Players. Must Have Games! Sonic Adventure: The first game in the Sonic Adventure series and the top selling Dreamcast game with over 1 million copies sold in the US alone. ![]() Sonic Adventure 2: More Sonic Adventure action! released to calibrate the 10th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis game. Samba De Amigo: Rhythm game made by Team Sonic. The game is played with a set of maracas while matching rhythm with the on screen action. Gunbird 2: 2D scrolling shooter (SHMUP) made by Capcom. Bangai-O: Multi-directional mecha shooter made by Treasure. Very fun and addictive game I highly recommend it. Skies of Arcadia: RPG where your play as Vyse a sky pirate trying to stop the Valuan Empire from taking over the world. ![]() Phantasy Star Online: One of the First Online Console RPG / Action games of its type. This was a huge hit for the Dreamcast and has spawned a few sequels on other consoles. you can still play this online today using hacked servers but even without the online feature its still a great game. Power Stone Series: Full 3D fighting game made by Capcom. A fan favorite on the Dreamcast and a must have title. The House of the Dead 2: On Rails Shooter for the Dreamcast. Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves: SNK fighter on the Dreamcast and the best in the Fatal Fury Series. Grandia II: Part 2 of the Grandia RPG series made by Game Arts. ![]() Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver: Part 2 of the Legacy of Kain series. The Dreamcast port has better graphics and sound and is overall the better version of the game. Dead or Alive 2: VS fighting game and part 2 in the DOA series. Soul Calibur: The first game in the Soul Calibur series made by Namco. A must have for the Dreamcast. Space Channel 5: Music game where you mimic the movements of your foes in a dance off fashion. Shenmue: Open-world adventure / RPG with 3D battles. At the time of launch Shenmue was unmatched on visuals and had weather effects and real-time elements never before used in video games. ![]() Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare: Survival Horror game and 4th in the series. This is a must have title on the Dreamcast. Jet Grind Radio: Cel-Shaded Rollerblade game where you skate around the city and paint over different gang signs. Very fun and addictive game. Virtua Tennis: Sega's Tennis game on the Dreamcast and still one of my all time favorite sport titles. Outtrigger: First-person / third-person shooter made by Sega for the arcade and Dreamcast. Daytona USA: Classic Sega Arcade racer ported to the Dreamcast. ![]() Crazy Taxi: Taxi game where you pick up people and take them to their destination as fast as possible to earn extra time. A Must have title. Mars Matrix: Capcom SHMUP where you collect coins to upgrade the power of your ship. Bomberman Online: Bomberman for the Dreamcast. When launched had online play through Sega/Net. F355 Challenge: Passione Rossa: Great Ferrari racing game for the Dreamcast. Marvel VS. Capcom 2: Capcom VS fighter, 3 VS 3 team battle and a huge roster make this one of the best 2D fighting games ever made. ![]() Resident Evil: Code Veronica: Original Version of Code Veronica part of the Resident Evil series. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater:, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2: The best versions of the early Tony Hawk Pro Skater games. Dreamcast has unmatched graphics and game play compared to PS1 and N64 versions. Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike: Great Capcom Vs fighting game. Record of Lodoss War: Diablo II style game based off the Lodoss War anime series. Great underrated game for the Dreamcast. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Capcom VS fighting based of the Japanese manga. Giga Wing, Giga Wing 2: one of the best shoot em' up (SHMUP) games on the console. Giga Wing 2 adds 4 player action! Sega Rally 2: Arcade drift style rally racer from Sega. Cannon Spike: Multi-directional shooter from Psikyo and Capcom in the same fashion as Smash T.V. Edited by majinpowers, Nov 1 2010, 01:52 AM.

Importing on the Dreamcast ![]() Importing on the Dreamcast is as simple as buying a boot dist to allow you to boot your console to your region and then let you swap the disk with a game of another region. DC-X for Dreamcast is the best boot disk for this task, I have not had a game this will not boot. Unfortunately it is almost imposable to find a copy anywhere for the Dreamcast since its no longer made and eBay will not allow this item to be sold on there. You can also use the Game Shark CDX and the Utopia Book Disk to load some imports but I have had some games not work using the Game Shark CDX or Utopia. If you want to import I would recommend downloading a torrent of DC-X since you can no longer find it to purchase anywhere. ![]() ![]() Must Have Dreamcast Imports SEGAGAGA: A pure Sega Fan Service RPG!! A must have for sega fans and RPG lovers. (Lots of Japanese in this game) Shenmue 2: (Pal) The pal version of Shenmue some of the ones sold in North America came with a boot disc so it can be played on NA Dreamcast systems and since its the European version it is in English! Napple Tale: Alisia in Daydream: 2.5D platformer / adventure game with breathtaking music. Rainbow Cotton: First 3D game in the Cotton series. (SHMUP) Border Down: SHUMP for the Dramcast made by G.rev Super Street Fighter 2X: The Best Console Port of SFII. Capcom vs SNK 2: Part 2 in the Capcom VS SNK series. Under Defeat: SHMUP with breathtaking graphics on the Dreamcast. Zero Gunner 2: Helicopter SHMUP for the Dreamcast. Ikaruga: One of the best SHMUP's ever made. You can get this on Game Cube in North America so its not as much of a must have on the Dreamcast as it was at one point in time but I still feel it needs to be on the list. Guilty Gear X: A must have for 2D fighting fans or Guilty Gear fans. King of Fighters Series: Its a shame these didn't get ported over to North America because the KOF series is one of the best Team VS games around. Rez: 3D SHMUP that did get a Pal release but no North American one. Sakura Wars: Tactical / Strategy / Dating Sim Game series. (Lots of Japanese in these games) L.O.L.: Lack of Love: You are a creature on a alien planet trying to evolve by learning and teaching skills to other life forms found on the planet. Very import friendly game. Edited by majinpowers, Oct 27 2010, 11:45 PM.

Great read! I've always been fascinated by the Dreamcast, since I grew up playing Nintendo consoles. Both the Dreamcast and the Saturn are tragic systems to me, mainly because of Sega themselves. Hopefully I can get a Dreamcast soon, since they are crazily affordable now. I'll definitely look at this thread when I finally get a Dreamcast. Thanks for this! |

I am going to pick one of them up to see if it will work like the DC-X. So far the DC-X is the only one that has played every import I have tried on it. |

I recently purchased a Dreamcast bundle with 5 games and 3 controllers, plus the web browser and the VMU off of Ebay for $78. Great deal. |

I totally agree on that statement! The Dreamcast just simply feels like a in home arcade machine. No console since has been able to give the player this same feeling in my opinion. Edited by majinpowers, Aug 10 2010, 05:11 AM.

I still know some people that have never heard of the Dreamcast it makes me wanna cry. It is such a great system and my favorite to be exact. That is why I decided to make a Youtube Channel dedicated to getting games for that system. But yeah the Dreamcast was the system to actually expand my gaming genres and what I mean is that the Dreamcast made me like RPGS..yeah so after playing some of the great Rpgs on the Dreamcast I have started playing Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG on my Wii and I love those now |
