![]() General Info The PlayStation 2 launched in Japan on March the 4th 2000. Just one day after the launch of the PlayStation 2 it had sold over 980,000 units. The PlayStation 2 was launched in North America on October 26, 2000 in Europe on November 24 2000 and in Australia on November 30, 2000. The PS2 since launch has become the most successful console to date selling over 138 million units and having a massive game library of over 1,900 games. There are still games being released for the PS2 and more scheduled to release in 2010. The PS2 has had a massive 9 year run so far with one more year planned for it as well. The PS2 is still selling very well to be a sixth generation console. The PlayStation 2 is 100% backward compatible with the PlayStation1 . PlayStation 1 games, controllers and even memory cards (You can only use a PS1 memory card to save PS1 games) will work on the system. This was a a great move for Sony to make because it guaranteed the fans and success of the PlayStation would carry over to there new system. The PlayStation 2 also had DVD support and is capable of playing your DVD movies. During the time of the PS2 launch DVD players could still fetch a hefty price and this was another smart move made by Sony because for a little more than the price of a DVD player you could have a DVD player and a system to play PS1 and PS2 games. Sony used this to there full advantage and this played a major role in the downfall of the Sega Dreamcast that had no DVD playback feature. Original (FAT) PlayStation 2 The Original PlayStation 2 despite having such a successful launch, did have its share of problems. The early systems were plagued with disk read errors better know as DRE and a high failure rate. The Original PlayStation 2 came out of the box with no online support but you could buy the Network Adapter to attach to the unit for online play. The Original PlayStation 2 was able to have a hard disk drive attached to the system and Square took full advantage of this option porting Final Fantasy XI to a console. ![]() Slimline PlayStation 2 The Slimline PlayStation 2 launched In September 2004 with a smaller overall design and built in Ethernet. The power supply was moved outside of the case to cut back on the size and to remove heat from the unit. Because of the smaller design the PlayStation 2 lost the ability to have a HDD added to the system and playing Final Fantasy XI wasn't possible on the new system. Also the new design caused the original Multitap to no longer work with the slim model. Sony did release a new Multitap for the slim units. The Slim PlayStation 2 has ungone many revisions and now even has the PSU built inside the case because of being able to use small motherboards and integrated parts. ![]() Up close with the Slimline PlayStation 2 ![]() ![]() PlayStation 2 DualShock 2 Controller The PlayStation 2 more or less had a upgraded PlayStation 1 DualShock controller that added analog allowing all the buttons to be pressure sensitive. It still has the vibration feature built in and the dual analogs are more accurate. The PlayStation 2 is backward compatible with PlayStation 1 controllers and in most games you can use a PS1 DualShock controller because not many games took advantage of the pressure sensitive button setup. ![]() PlayStation 2 Memory Card The PlayStation 2 uses a 8MB memory card with Sony's MagicGate encryption technology. The MagicGate encryption made sure that only Sony approved memory cards could be used to save games. ![]() Edited by majinpowers, Sep 5 2009, 06:03 AM.

Playing Imports on your PS2 ![]() Playing Import games it possible on the PS2 with a very simple mod to the console. You need to buy what is called a "Flip Top Lid" for your PS2 and replace the original lid with the flip top one. This is very easy to do and only takes about 15 minutes to complete the entire process. (There is only a total of 6 screws involved) You will also need to buy a copy of Swap Magic 3 for the PS2. In total its about half the cost of a Japanese console and its running off the correct volts. Just go to this Link for more information on buying what you need to mod your PlayStation 2 to be able to play imports. http://www.swapmagic3.com/ How It Works After you mod your console with a Flip Top Lid you are able to open the unit without the PlayStation rebooting. So you insert Swap Magic 3 into the system and it boots to your region code and after the CD stops spinning you insert your import game then you just press the x button to boot and your playing Japanese games that where never released in North America. I don't condone Copying or modding your system to try and play ripped games but I feel its totally fine to play imports because there is a ton of great PS2 games that never made it to North America and you would have no other way of playing them other than modding your system or buying a Japanese console that would run off different volts. Flip Top Lids for both models Swap Magic ![]() Modded Slimline PlayStation 2 ![]() Importing allows for great SHMUP action! I for one am a huge fan of SHMUPS and for some reason they tend to crap on us here in North America not bringing over great titles. Thunder Force VI is a great example, Sega has ported every Thunder Force game to North America since Thunder Force 2 on the Genesis but for some reason they feel we don't need Thunder Force VI. I own every Thunder Force Game made and when Sega didn't port part VI over it was like slapping us in the face. ![]() Other great SHMUPS that didnt make it to North America include.... 1) Espgaluda 2) Mushihimesama 3) IBARA 4) Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 3 5) Shikigami no Shiro (Castle of Shikigami 1) 6) Star Soldier remade for PS2 and the list goes on and on. I really liked the game back when I played it. Its a very strange game to place into a genre and your going to either love it or hate it, so I would check out a few reviews of the game and game play video and then decide if its for you or not. Edited by majinpowers, Oct 25 2009, 10:08 PM.

Well it is made by the same guys that made Shadow of the Colossus but it is a totally different game. Shadow of the Colossus is more about fighting huge bosses and ICO leans more toward solving puzzles to escape the dungeon your trapped in. Edited by majinpowers, Oct 25 2009, 10:08 PM.

The PS2 has games for everyone no matter what kind of games you like. With a 10 year life span the system has a massive library of games. My list has more RPG's on it but that's just because its my favorite type of game and the PS2 has a large amount to pick from. |

WOW! Great list for anyone who is collecting for the PS2 and wants to get the best games. But how could you forgot the God of War games? And Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3? And Resident Evil 4? Anyway, it's still a great article. EDIT: Sorry, now I noticed you have GOW there... Edited by HardcoreRetroGamer, Oct 27 2009, 05:56 PM.
